We hit the StripWe hit the StripWe hit the Strip

As the skies darkened, we headed out.
After we left Gilmer and Steve's house, we meandered around a bit, then ultimately found our way to the correct rout out of LA toward Las Vegas. It was actually a pretty straightforward trip through the suburbs, over the Sierras, and through the desert. We arrived in Vegas well before dark and checked in to Treasure Island (they had the best-priced room on the Strip). After making it through registration, we settled into our room, then headed out for our big night in Sin City. We saw many of the typical Vegas sights, including the "volcano" at the Mirage, the dancing fountains at Bellagio, the amazing neon lights, and the myriad people snapping coupons to get our attention, then thrusting them into our faces. We mostly weren't taking them, but mostly they seemed to be from services featuring women very eager to meet us.

We opted for a good sushi dinner at Caesar's Palace, affording us the opportunity to have some good food and to experience the over-the-top decor at Caesar's. Next, we chose a combined stand-up comedy and burlesque show in the theater at Planet Hollywood. It was a fun show, with raunchy comedy, drinks, and not-too-naughty dancing. We

enjoyed the show, then headed back toward Treasure Island.

We arrived in time for Treasure Island's outdoor show, "Sirens of TI." It was an entertaining mix of lip-synching, dancing, and pyrotechnics. The mechanisms were impressive, and the bodies were amazing. After the show, we headed into the casino to try our luck at the slots. We risked a total of $20, and came out with $39.50. To celebrate our winnings, we headed to one of the casino bars for a nightcap. Unfortunately, Alec was spotted as being under 21 and invited to leave the bar. It is unfortunate that, although anyone over 18 can gamble or attend topless shows, if they are under 21, they can't even be in the same place with people who are drinking. Alec chose to retire for the night. Andrew and I, after finishing a beer, did the same.

As usual, I awoke early the next morning. Leaving the boys for some extra sleep, I went in search of coffee. I had a large cup and some oatmeal at the in-hose Starbucks, then decided to try my luck again in the casino. I risked $20 on the quarter slots (after all, I was just playing with last night's winnings, right?). I played for a while, and ultimately hit a pretty good win and cashed out for $89. Our winnings pretty well paid for our room, so we left feeling that we had a good experience at a fair price.

All in all, we had a good time at an unplanned stop, and it provided an interesting interlude in our travels. I think all three of us would like to return, although perhaps under different circumstances. Alec, of course, would like to come back when he is over 21. Andrew would like to revisit with people his own age, and I would enjoy the same thing. Our next stop, not too far up the road, would be Zion Canyon National Park.

Las Vegas
We too enjoyed most of the free shows. But I have never seen a place that uses as much energy. Our best to all of you.
