We walked along Belongil Beach passed the hippies reading poetry to themselves into town & met up with the Blackdog Surfing lot. There was eight of us surfing today along with two instructors, Jason & Mark. Once we had applied gallons of sunscreen & picked up a rash shirt we headed in the van down to the Pass, just a little east of Main Beach. The beach was sandy & waves were breaking quite far out & cruising gently to the shore.
We began with a bit of a stretch & then learnt the basics of getting up onto a surfboard. Then it was time to get out into the water, a few of the girls who had been surfing before, headed off with Mark & the rest of us waded out with Jason. After a few attempts we were all standing up on the boards, the next bit, paddling on the wave & up, was not so easy. It was time for a break.
A large sea turtle joined us for our second session but then quickly realised eight people falling off boards wouldn't help him in any way. We were now up for some party waves & tried surfing the same waves at the same time. This started off well but usually ended with a crossed path & one or both boarders going under.
Once we were all shattered we headed home for a planned relaxing afternoon on the beach.
The waves had turned mean over lunch & there's just so long you can sit on a beach before having to cool off in the water. The options were to either put your feet in the water (not especially cooling), wade out till up to your waist where the waves were breaking (invigorating as the currents were knocking you all over the place) or wade out past the breaking waves. The third option had me bobbing gently as the waves past until a mammoth wave which seemed to swallow the sky crept up & broke over my head. This sent me back towards shore underwater & back into the zone with the breaking waves - so much for a relaxing afternoon!
We headed home along Belongil Beach & crashed out at the beachhouse. A walk at night along the beach & the lack of light pollution makes you realise that no matter how far you travel across the globe the universe is a big place (no wonder there are so many hippies here).
