See you later UK!
After our farewell goodbyes to family we headed through to departures to board the BA that would take us to Boston. A cheeky beer to celebrate departure then joined the queue to be seated on board. Bowks gave me a little tap on the shoulder and whispered in my ear that she thought Hermione Granger from Harry Potter was stood behind us. After a few stealth looks and a little support from the Daily Mail front cover with a picture of her on, we boldly asked her if it was her, and…yes it was! So after a brief chat telling her what we were up to we allowed her to head off to first class whilst we joined the rest of the commoners at the back of the plane.
The flight was fine, pretty much how flights go really, a film, a snooze, some food, a walk to the toilet and then repeat. Must admit it was a little more of a novelty for me as I had never been on a plane of such size nor any longer than 3 hours.
Touchdown 1.15pm local time, a gain of 5 hours. Through passport control
and outside to catch a bus and tube to downtown Boston to find our first hostel. We found our hostel the YWCA which was only a couple of blocks from the underground. The room wasn’t too bad except being a great absorber of noise and we were often woken at 6am by the passing traffic, although jet-lag also did a good job of waking us up at that time anyway!
After we got rid of our bags we headed straight to wander around Boston for the afternoon. We checked out a game of baseball being played on Boston Common then took a walk up to the Italian quarter to get some food, which was a 16inch, mahoosive pizza. Certainly enough to suffice 2 people! By 8.30pm we were shattered and asleep in bed!
Next day got up early and went down for the hostel inclusive breakfast which was great especially the waffle machine. A few weird people eating breakfast and Bowks and I came to the conclusion that the hostel obviously housed a few, well…odd people! The woman who wouldn’t own up to messing up the waffle machine and the lady who had crushed her lung in the
lift doors were but a few.
Breakfast was essential as we had a very busy day in front of us beginning with a trip to Harvard University. Our student tour guide was the ‘whole ton of fun’ Adam. He was ever friendly, tight shorted and thought almost everything was a whole ton of fun. Still he was a good guide and certainly knew his dates and other facts. Some of real interest and others such as ‘this building has the most non religious stained glass in it in the whole world’ of not any real interest whatsoever. Cambridge, home of Harvard Uni was a lovely part of Boston, a nice leafy area surrounded by quaint shops.
Following our tour we headed by bus back into Boston centre and stop to buy some lovely spinach and onion bread at a little stall. We then walked back to the hostel to eat some lunch. The afternoon was spent walking the 3.5 mile Freedom Trail which follows the story of the beginning of the American Revolution and the famous Tea Party. It was a real nice way to see different parts of Boston. At one point we found ourselves in a little market area full of different foods and other bits and bobs, not forgetting the Christmas shop!
We stopped in a bar but were not served as didn’t look over 21, brilliant! So instead returned to hostel completely walked out, bought a couple of beers from a liquor store instead and then bed by a slightly more impressive 9.30pm!
Last day in Boston consisted of a late get up (7.30am!), a couple of games of backgammon, the ever great hostel breakfast with the weirdo’s then caught the tube to Fenway Park to go and see the home of the Boston Red Sox baseball team. We had a walk around the perimeter and then made our way back to the hostel, packed and then off to bus station to catch a bus to Rachel’s cousins Catherine and Ken in Waterbury, Connecticut.
First impressions of the USA all good and everything is BIG!
Over and out.
Love Doddy and Bowks.
