1: Joe feeds the sharks 15 secs

September 23rd

So after 6 months of planning, a crapton of saving, and a ridiculously long flight, I am finally here in New Zealand! Yay! The flight was actually not half as bad as I expected (margaritas are my savior). There was very little turbulence and I was sitting next to the sweetest couple in the world- they looked like they were both in their seventies or so, and Ken was taking Arnie(?) to New Zealand for a week because he’d never been off of the North American continent. After the flight Arnie told me “Well, next time Ken’ll just have to upgrade all 3 of us to first class! Teehee.“ Awwwwwwwww.

Customs went smoothly, they didn’t even ask to see my bank statement or proof of medical insurance!! My hostel on Mt. Eden is cute but Auckland is kind of like every other urban place in the world- there’s lots of people, a lack of grocery stores, and today it happens to be raining cats and dogs. (sheep?) I walked forever trying to find somewhere to buy some cereal, and finally gave up and went to eat soup at this little café- Frasers. It’s definitely a soup day.

I have to say though, the highlight of my September 23rd so far has been my shower. I know. It’s ridiculous. But you know how you have one of those days where nothing really will make you feel better except being pummeled with really hot water? Well I feel like I had that day times two weeks. And what a wonderful shower it was.

Also- random difference between Western Washington and Auckland. Here the rhodies aren’t bushes. They’re trees. Like they look like freaking maples or something- they’re taller than the houses!!

Tomorrow I’ll go get my bank account and IRD number. I have my hostel booked til Sunday and the fbook meetup is on Saturday. I kinda wish I hadn’t booked it for all week- I am antsy to get out of Seattle…. Urm I mean Auckland. :-P

I miss you all already! I hear it’s like 90 and sunny…go ahead. Rub it in for now. But just remember that I’m going to be hanging out on hot water beach this January when you all are snowed in. Just puttin’ it out there. ;-)

Today I went to the underground aquarium with two of my roommates. We watched the scuba diver (Joe) feed the sharks and the turtles and sting rays. It was muy bien. ((See the video that I may or may not be able to upload of Joe feeding a shark.)) On our way back from the busstop it started raining so hard that we had to stop in a store for shelter in order to not get washed away. I got some great pictures though! I did not have time to go to the bank or the post office unfortunately- maybe tomorrow. I was planning on going snowboarding or surfing soon but frankly, it’s too damn rainy to do just about anything (besides the underground aquarium of course). Summer??? Are you here yet!!!?!

Random note- the aquarium used to be the sewer. WEIRD.

I'm glad you're there safe and settling in! I'm wearing my NZ shirt today :D That seahorse pic is so neat! You seem to be on fbook just as much as when you're on this side of the Pacific...
