Korcula day 4-5 (26-27 August)

We took a local bus to the bus station to catch our coach to Korcula. It was a scenic ride along the coast to the small town Orebic where the bus got on the Ferry to take us to the island of Korcula after a few hours drive. We had private rooms again here, which were right in the old town. Korcula is a very pretty place, with clear and calm waters that invited you to just spend the day watching the sea from the waterside cafes.

Of course we did more than that. The first night we took a local bus to a farm that had made a restaurant on their property that served local dishes from local produce. A real feast.

The next day we went sea kayaking which sounds idyllic, and it is, but it is also hard work. We paddled to a local island that had a famous quarry (no longer in use) but claims to have some of its stone in many famous buildings including the White House.

We also were told of the local history of the area, which included the usual theme of having been taken over by many empires over the years, and because of the close proximity to Italy, the Venetians were one of the main ones. We then kayaked further to another island, where we swam or snorkelled in the clear waters, although rocky beach.

Another half hour kayak to a “sandy beach” for a final swim before the kayak back to our starting point. At this point we were all tired but pleased we had made it. The kayak guide then took us to his home where he served us a wonderful lunch, again with local produce, including sardines, tuna pasta, fresh salad and cheeses. Desert unfortunately was watermelon, but you can’t have everything. I did try to hide my disgust!

The local guide told us that after the tourist season is over, he then goes fishing for octopus (catching them by hand, up to a certain size). He told us that you need to freeze them for at least a couple of weeks to make them tender, which I thought was interesting. He claims other methods of tenderising octopus don’t work.

We watched the sun set over the harbour from a wonderfully placed bar. We had great views of the luxury yachts from here, and made up stories about the comings and goings of one family on a particularly well appointed one. As the sunset another one with sails set out onto the harbour, we think just to afford the occupants a better view for their dinner. Korcula is definitely a place that you could really spend a week doing nothing but read, swim and eat. Our three days here were wonderful.
