This is the bus that took me from San Francisco to Reno. It was surprisingly comfortable!
Hello Everyone,

I am here in Reno. I arrived on Wednesday but have had lots of problems with internet. I am now sat in the University of Nevada library. It's a really nice uni but I feel like I'm living in an American teen movie. Everything is living up to its stereotype. On Friday night there was a house party run by the Le Cross team. It's good fun though but I do keep laughing to myself when I hear certain words such as 'awesome' and 'far out'.

Reno is a funny place but I quite like it. It's very small with 1 street full of casinos with a couple of wedding chapels thrown in. A much smaller version of Vegas. There are slot machines everywhere - the airport, gas stations and even in supermarkets, they love to gamble!

The second night here a small group of us hit the town of Reno, our first port of call was a student bar. It felt more like a youth club with white lights, arcade games and a football table, however I was prepared to let this go when I found out the price of the drinks. $1 for a pint of beer and 50c for a spirit and mixer (that's about 30p) and they free-pore the spirits. So a couple of us managed to get quite drunk on some rum and cokes and only spent about $3!!! We then made our way to a traditional American bar called shooters before ending up in a terrible karaoke bar. It was a fun night and interesting experience though and I managed to make some new friends.

There are 14 internationals and everyone seems lovely. There are 2 guys from Denmark, 2 from the Netherlands, 1 girl from Korea, 1 from Germany and 8 of us from UK. I am getting on particularly well with Suzanna from Germany and James, Emma and Adam from the UK.

On Friday we were taken to our house for the next few weeks. It's a cabin in the middle of nowhere, very close to Lake Tahoe. It's 8000ft above sea level so as you can imagine the views are amazing. The only downside is that my ears pop every time we drive into the city. Luckily due to the altitude horrible spiders tend not to be found around this area. There are lots of ants, hundreds of chipmunks (who are very cute), squirrels and bears (though I'm yet to see one). Don't worry though, the bears are pretty harmless. They are terrified of people.

We start our first day of work tomorrow. We're all working together which is nice and we'll be trail building very close to Lake Tahoe. The lake is beautiful and luckily we're working 5 minutes walk from the water so we can go for a swim in our lunch break!

I'll let you know how it all goes next week. Hope you are all well back in England, would love to hear from you all.

Love Collette
