Our first trip across this was in the dark after visiting the bar. So much easier this time!
Last weekend we took a trip to a resort just outside of Shanghai in Sheshan. Our neighbors said it was like going to the country and we were ready for change of scenery so we booked a weekend. Sheshan is known for their mountains. They are more like hills but when compared to the rest of Shanghai, which is completely flat, we can call them mountains.

On Saturday we walked about a mile to the base of the Xisheshan Mountain (Xi in Chinese means West). On the top of the mountain is the Sheshan Catholic Church. The church was first established in 1871 by a French missionary and rebuilt in 1925 by a Portuguese Jesuit priest. In 1942 the pope named the church as the Holy Palace which made it a Holy Land for pilgrimage of Chinese Catholics. During the Cultural Revolution the church was heavily damaged but is currently being restored.

About half way to the church there is a courtyard with a small chapel. We were getting more stares than usual for being non-Chinese. Not a big deal so we continued to check out our destination. Everyone is taking pictures like tourist do and then we were asked to take a picture for a Chinese family. Make that take a picture “with” a Chinese family. We did not know these people but they insisted we be part of their family portrait. We also made a cameo with another young girl (who asked us in perfect English) and her mother. We have heard of this happening but it was the first time for us.

While on the mountain it started to rain so we decided to get a ride back to the hotel. For all of 15 Yuan or about $2.20 we were peddled back to the hotel. It was great fun and it is amazing that this guy could peddle his bike uphill with the two of us in the back. Jason gave him a tip and he was more than happy to let us take a photo.

The sun came out for the afternoon so we spent several hours at the pool. What a great way to relax!
