Found this amazing bread and pizza shop in the Citta Alta (upper town) - old Bergamo.
Wanted to visit Italy and this opportunity couldn be missed - base in Bergamo to visit Italian lakes and Venice. Turned out managed to see Verona too. Got about on Regionale local and Trenitalia intercity trains. Everything I hoped - beautiful country and city landscapes, amazing architecture and art, (and of course perfect food). Bergamo is a great small city with such an interesting split between modern and old towns, connected by road and steep funicular rail. Found local Bergamo fare on the Saturday night and drank a great Lombardy cabernet from a jug in a mug! Totally no understanding of Italian language but took a phrase book and coped just about (apart from misunderstanding on the Sunday, sailing across Lago di Garda to Garda town and ended up disembarking thinking all afternoon I was in Garda when in fact I was in Lazise - plonker)! Nice wee town though and great campari type cocktail Spritz to pass siesta time. Verona next day - loved it. Perfect size to wander around. So much history. Tried to book opera Aida in Roman Arena but when about to pay realised it was a day too early for performance - second plonker moment. Venice is Venice. Tourist overload but it just about copes. Found some quiet alleys and canals - just wandering in the shaded streets in the heat is bliss (and sadly being distracted by shops difficult to avoid). Witnessing the emergency services in action was an experience. Lake Como was a beautiful finale to the travelling about and two hours in Bellagio unforgettable. Bought a silk scarf there for the french road trip in September - will look like Bridget Jones I suspect!

Good on ya!
Sue Am so envious of these wonderful trips; everywhere looks delightful and inspiring. Thank you so much for the birthday card, was lovely. Party is tomorrow, then off on holiday for a few days. Trying to get something booked but not so far. Just a bit of sun and sangria, I think. Enjoy your other trips and hopefully you are not thinking about us at all. Hope your parents are well. Allison xx
