A group of us out to dinner - celebrating finding places to LIVE!Yesterday was a good day. Kallie and I gave our deposit and 1st month's rent (and realized we have TWO beds in the 2nd room so anyone who wants a vacation in Honduras, you are free to stay at my place!), and went to the mall to sign up for cable/internet (even though we don't take possession of our places until Wednesday) as well as I got some towels and sheets for 30% off at "Lady Lee" store.
Chuck (Art department head) and his wife Naomi (vice-principal for high school) have been SO good to all us new teachers. We've gone up to their house for a party already, Naomi has been taking us around to see the apartments, barter with the landlords, and help translate contracts. Last night they took us out to a restaurant owned by the husband of our curriculum coordinator, Anahi.
We had some great food and conversation (and it was quite a swanky little place!) then we head out to "Sabor Cubano" bar, which is salsa music! Yes, I previously thought salsa was a lost cause in Honduras but here we were!
Chuck and Naomi are great dancers, and I did get the
Fresa!
"fresa" is how you say strawberry in Spanish, but it also means "posh" or "stuck-up". This place was what I called "swanky" but what others called "fresa" chance to dance with Chuck. All of us teachers just felt so relaxed, as most of us signed contracts yesterday for apartments. PLUS, it was payday for most Hondurans, as it was the last day of the month, AND the curfew was lifted last night so people could stay out as late as they wanted.
We had a great time. I'm really liking the people I'll be working with for the next 2 years. They're good people and I'm having a lot of fun with them.
We did have a bit of a run in with some transvestite prostitutes afterwards, so that was a bit of a wake-up call to not even walk from one corner to the other. Once we get the cell phone number of a reliable taxi driver, and once we all have cell phones, we'll just call our personal taxi before even stepping out the doors.
So far, things are feeling good. I'm looking forward to being settled in my apartment and then starting school. Great things ahead I feel!
