Lobos Isle in background from Corralejo
Still suffering from the harsh reality to returning to the world of work in London winter I really needed some sunshine, and
after a bit of a hard slog/flu etc a tonic was required. So my friend Graham and I decided to get away somewhere where we
could escape the fast lane but not have to fly too far or spend too much money.

And in the end with Fuerterventura we made a very good chocie.

We flew in with First Choie Holidays from a dreary Gatwick (just get on as late as possible as there is so little
legroom) and it's only a four hour flight. Transferred over to the north eastern town of Corralejo. There a few
'resort' style places here but there is enough of the town to retain it's own identity. We were in an apartment on
a resort but we found that the town had a healthy choice of places to eat which seemed to be the order
of the day.

The temperature even in January was around 23-25C and a very sunny/wind combo that is never less than pleasant.
The sand dunes everywhere remind you of just how near Africa is (60 miles) Beware though, these dunes are crawling
with middle-aged, naked Germans, quite scarily so.

One of the surprises on hiring a car for the day was in the south of the island, Jandia, we thought it was a little traditional
fishing village, no it turns into a wide motorway and then is a huge shopping mall and resort. However you will find more
centrally in the Island many hill drives that take you high and steep that for me (first time driving on right) was a new challenge
to my driving skills.

Another option we took was a daytrip on the Ferry from Corrajello to Lanzarote, a nice short ferry trip and reminds you that
on Fuerterventura, you've got that bit less developed. All in all, if it's parties you want, and you want t avoid naked Germans,
this is not the isle for you, but if you're not bothered by naked Germans, and want a bit of a battery recharge without the
rampant development of the other Canary Isles, then this is an option well worth considering.
