Ferry Trip
On the morning ferry-the water was calm. Greetings from Dar Es Salaam~
There is so much to share as I have not been able to post for quite awhile. I made an attempt the past two days and have had trouble with the internet and the post fails. I am hoping that I have better luck and can share this and the photos with you. =)
Abu and I have spent some time going around the city: running errands, showing me the different parts of town, and taking the nieces/nephews out for ice cream.
This past weekend Abu and I traveled to Zanzibar by ferry. We were running to make the 7am departure and I am pretty sure we were the last two to board the ship. It took about 2 hours to get there. As soon as we were leaving the port there were continually taxi drivers offering their service. Abu’s brother’s sister-in-law use to live in Zanzibar and the gentleman who watches her apartment was going to take us around. We stopped and had breakfast which was a chipati (flat bread), samosa, mandazi (donut), and cake. Definitely not what fits into my typical breakfast but it was definitely all good. We then traveled a little out
Sultan Palace (Slavery Time)
Abu and I taking in all the information of the main city and went on several tours. We saw the palace of the past sultan’s, the sultan’s palace for his secondary wives, a bathing house, a spice tour, and the beach. The spice tour was probably the highlight of the trip for both Abu and I. There were two guides who took us through the ‘plantation’ and identified the plants as well as how they are used. I can now say I know where cinnamon, vanilla, ginger and many more come from. The smell of cinnamon from the bark was unbelievable. The guide even climbed a coconut tree, while singing, and brought down a coconut which he then cut open so we could drink the water (Zanzibar’s Coca-Cola).
We stayed at a small bed and breakfast which was a few blocks from ZIFF, Zanzibar International Film Festival. It just so happened to be the opening night so we headed there for the evening. It was almost like the taste of Omaha outside which is where we had dinner. It was a different type of chipati with grilled meat (chicken and beef), lettuce and tomato. Again the food was delicious, as I am quickly deciding that I have not
Little Hut
Our house in Zanzibar =) found food here that I do not like. Before the film for the evening there was poetry (in Swahili), singing, and traditional music/dancing. The film was in another language, Abu was not sure which it was, but there were English subtitles.
The following day we went to a small animal park and saw snakes, turtles, lizards, crabs and a few others. We were not courageous enough to hold any of the above, imagine that. =) The reminder of the day was spent around the town walking before it was time to take the ferry back.
I am going to attach some pictures so that you can see firsthand some of these sights. I have been practicing the song that was sung so that while climbing coconut trees in the future I am ready to perform. =)
Miss you all-can’t wait to share more with you once I am back.
Abu says hello and sends his love as well. =)
