The Appalachian Tour

Approximate route starting from Montreal and returning via the eastern seaboard to Montreal via St Donat in the Laurentian Mountains. THIS WAS OUR INTENDED ROUTE - IN THE END WE CUT OUT THE EASTERN SEABORD AND BACK UP THROUGH VIRGINIA TO NEW YORK STATE

The flying sofa awaits .....Please note - this is not my photograph but a stock Honda image - but hey I'm promoting their bike for free (actually not, it's costing a load to hire the thing)
The journey began on the 24th July 2009. We flew to Montreal as the start of ourmotorcycle tour of the Appalachians

Our ultimate aim was to tour the Appalachians/Smokies/Blue Ridge Parkway/Pisgah/ending with the Dragons Tail, then head East to Savannah and up the East coast back up to Canada

The Plan: Our plan was to use Montreal as our base where we spent two days acclimatising and looking around the town, and ultimately would return there to fly back out after visiting family

We spent our first 3 nights in B&B at ready to then
collect a hire bike from St Therése just north of Montreal.

We had two options
1. Head North to see our cousins in the Laurentian Mountains for 2 days or
2. Head down South into the States to Lowell MA where Joan Baez will be in concert and see our cousins on our return

In the end we did the latter but missed out on the Joan Baez concert and went to the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge MA instead. See

We then went on tour down to Connecticut to meet with cousins Bernie and Raquel on

Carol practicing for the trip - clearly not yet excited - but getting there
the beach, then onto the Appalachian Mountains for some sight seeing and walking

Our return journey was somewhat different from the plan - as you will see from the map on the main page and from subsequent entries

The inspiration for our outward route came from Road Trip USA - which I highly recommend for anyone wanting to tour on roads away from the Interstatesb] See

For those of you who have the inclination, time and money read on and take the trip through the Appalachians. It's the trip of a lifetime and you'll not regret it.[
