View from the hostel patio - a storm is brewing.

Isla del Sol

You land in Yumani, the largest village on the island (probably 50 people) and after picking up your backpack you see what you have to climb to in order to get to your accommodation.

Yep, the good old Incas built a stairway, but they were fitter than us, and so, thought nothing of its gradient. They just didn´t take into account backpackers with their heavy loads and too many Menu del Dia´s under their belts.

Christmas Day was spent with a mix of nationalities on the very appropriate Isla del Sol (previously one of the most important religious sites in the Andean world, apparently where the Inca dynasty was born).

We didn´t set off to cover the whole island but once we got started we were captivated by the views. Our Christmas day stroll became a hike of the island to take in the stunning beauty. As far as the eye can see, the azure expanse of the lake stretches out. Serene.

From one peninsula we got a lift to Ch'allampa with two girls (12yrs and 14yrs) in their boat who rowed us across.
