2 days ago I finally landed in BKK. Immediately upon exiting the airport I was forced to stare down and yell at an aggressive taxi driver. Seriously, dude.
Took the bus to Hua Lamphong train station in the "middle" of the city (I say that because only YHWH knows if BKK actually has a middle, though it would be made of delicious noodles and egg yolk if it did). The only train left to Chiang Mai didn't leave until 10 at night, which left me 8 hours to explore Chulalongkorn Uni about a mile east of here, and to lick my wounds from getting short-changed at the train ticket window.
Back at the train station, I met no less than 4 groups of students from the UK. Most were going scuba diving in the south, I was kind of surprised none were heading this direction.
Finally, after hours of exploring, sitting, Thai commercials on the jumbo-tron repeating every 5 minutes (which, in my delusional and over-heated state, thought I was coherently translating into English by the end of it all), I finally boarded the train for Chiang Mai.
The next morning (which I think was yesterday) was
actually pretty sweet, as we were nowhere near BKK and up in the leafy green goodness of northern Thailand. I met a girl from CA, Katie, who had spent the past 4 months teaching English in Indonesia and had separated from her friends to explore Cambodia and Thailand.
And blessing of all blessings, Bethany called and told me that the final leg of the trip, a 3-hour bus ride to Fang, wouldn't be needed after all, as they were driving down to meet me!
Way more I could say, but we've got to be going...enjoy some pics. - steve g
