June 1st
After an exhausting couple of days in the jungle we took the day off and just sat in our room watching DVDs, reading and enjoyed doing nothing. The only time we ventured outside was to eat at our favorite restaurant. Oh, how we love the spicy food here!
Today's highlights:
1. Rest and relaxation.
June 2nd
We decided not to spend the
whole of today indoors. We felt we should at least see a few sights while we're still in Sandakan, so after breakfast we hit the road. First, we walked to the WWII Chinese Memorial and the Japanese Cemetery, located in the hills above Sandakan. We stopped for a few photographs but were immediately assaulted by an army of mosquitoes! In a matter of seconds Talita had a dozen bites on her legs and arms. We snapped a few photos then beat a hasty retreat.
On the way to our next destination we passed Agnes Keith's House. It's the house where the writer used to live and was later turned into a museum. We didn't go in, just got a few photos and moved on.
Next we visited the Ancient Graveyard. We wandered between
the old graves, looking at the dates and the people now long gone. Next we went to St. Michael's Church. We couldn't go in so we just got a few photos and moved on.
By this time we were both sweating profusely so we walked to the nearest Cineplex (which wasn't very near at all) where we got tickets for the new Terminator movie followed by Monsters vs Aliens. Ferdi had been looking forward to the Terminator movie and Talita was excited for the Monsters movie.
We had some time to kill so we had a coke and a fruit juice at the restaurant next door. As we were enjoying our icy drinks Ferdi noticed that his wife had started turning a little red around the shoulders, chest and neck area. Once again we had ventured out without our sunscreen ("Tisk tisk" said aunt Helga...)
We skipped lunch thinking we'll have popcorn during the movie. We were out of luck though. They didn't have any popcorn! Who've ever heard of watching a movie in the cinema without popcorn? It's just not natural...
Anyway... Terminator 4 was awesome! Afterward we had a very late lunch and then
some teenagers wanted to have their picture taken with Talita. Grinning and a little embarrassed by all the attention she posed with each one. We all had a good laugh because they were so short compared to Talita.
Monsters vs Aliens (animation movie) was hilarious. It featured a really tall woman called Gigantor. Afterward we had a giggle because here in Asia Talita
is Gigantor. On the way back to our hotel we went into a small shop to get water. A young boy walked in and all he could say when he saw us was "Wow" in a breathless little voice. It's strange to be so popular. Every second person says hi and lots of people hoot and wave at us from passing cars. It's like we're celebrities or something!
Back in our hotel we had a nice shower, then settled in for a nice chill evening and another movie.
Today's highlights:
1. Going to the movies again!
