Saturday Night

Day 6 on Statia:

It feels like I have been here for a month now. I am still in shock that my life here has only begun... Though I am loving the weather, the cold showers and mossies (mosquitos) are definitely things I hope to get used to. However, it is also hard to complain when I wake up on a hill of flowers and fruit trees, surrounded by hummingbirds and the quiet of nature that I haven't experienced since being in the back country of the Sierras 10 years ago...eeek has it been that long?

Today I woke up later than usual, usual now being 6:30am, and went to the chinese market which is the only store open on Saturdays. After getting some food for the week, I laid in a hammock reading "Kafka on the Shore" which I really can't put down right now. When I finally pried it out of my own hands I decided to do some painting while my roommates went on a dive. I had the whole garden to myself until Tzio, a local, came over to say hello and was inspired to start drawing with me. The thing with living at the garden is it is open to the public. Though we have our own private house, we do share our pavillion with the public. It is usually empty so we are always laying around there but occasionally people come through and I can't really say "oh, hey... I was really hoping to take a nap in the hammock...do you mind?" It was nice to have company regardless...and plans are very informal around here so I am just going with the flow.

Tonight I am babysitting for my boss, which means I get to use the internet, take a warm shower, watch TV, and wash my clothes in a machine...AMAZING...all luxuries I weill forever appreciate after my time here (at least I'll try). I am so happy to be in on a Saturday night watching Mama Mia and hanging out with the my new friend Caroline, the Marine Park intern.

That's it for now! I will try and fill in some more blogs and add more pictures soon.
