This morning Werner, Pat, Don, and I headed for Khobar. I am now an official Khobar tour guide. However, one place that I had seen - and had even been in - is Latif (La-teef) bakery. It has been recommended to me by several people, so I wanted to give it a try.

The place is really a hole-in-the wall. I suppose the most decorative attraction is the box of stacked water, or perhaps the discarded industrial size mixer that is by the door. However, if you ask nicely, you can get a box of tissues to use as napkins (that’s pretty common here, by the way).

Pat had eaten here previously and had a few suggestions. It’s called a bakery, but it’s more like Wolfgang Puck designer pizzas. Take a look at the menu. I had the “Zatar Cheese” which is a combination of spices (oregano, maybe thyme, and I don’t know what else) along with cheese. This was infinitely better than the Cheese bread at Dhahran Hills last night. Don had zatar, cheese, and black olives. Pat had onion and egg. All were fantastic. Mine cost 3 riyals, which is less than a dollar!

You can see that Latif is not known for their great atmosphere!
a sandal shop and Werner looked at the shoes. Pat fell in love with a pair of sandals to replace his worn out ones. I’m sure they will fit right in at home in Florida.

This afternoon I did some laundry and finished setting up the SAC Center for SAC #5 that starts on Saturday. I’m looking forward to a quiet day tomorrow and hopefully meeting up with Manir and his family. Today it was 104 degrees F. and it's supposed to be warmer tomorrow.

I had the Zatar and Cheese. I highly recommend it. If I'm looking a bit hot, it's because it was 104 degrees today.

The crappier the atmosphere....
....the better the food! What kind of cheese is it--feta? Those sandals are way cool. Let me guess--5 riyals?

Cheese and Sandals
eve, I'm not sure what kind of cheese, definitely not feta, but I really don't know. I'll let Pat know you liked his sandals and ask him how many riyals. They are a good quality leather, so even in Saudi, probably more than 5 SAR!

Pat says they cost 50 Riyals; the original asking price was 55 Riyals. So he paid about 15 dollars or so.

Best cheese bread
Latif is known for their cheese bread and zatar bread - staples for expats, especially the kids. I always pick it up the day our kids are arriving for the holidays (any many other times also).
