28th March 2009 - A WALK UP MOUNT JOHN & PRETTY LAKE TEKAPO!!

I woke up early and went to have breakfast and watch TV for a while until Nat got up. We weren’t in a rush today and took our time getting ready and sorting out our things for the day before setting out. We planned to do the walk up to Mount John Observatory and back to the town around the lakeside. We expected it to take a good 5 hours or so from the information we had and so we were on our way by 10.30am

We set off on the first part of the walk taking us through town and along the lakeside. Nat tried to phone Michelle (one of our friends from home) along the way but got cut off due to lack of credit on her phone. Soon after we received a text telling us to get in contact as loads had happened that week. We were very curious as to what had gone on and spent around 15 minutes trying to top up and make contact without any luck! Intrigue got the better of us and after pestering for over 10 minutes by way of text we received the gossip…..ken Barlow was having an affair!! Think we need to get home quick if the highlight of the week at home is what’s happening on Coronation Street! Come on ladies…sort it out!!

Following the phone business we continued on our way and onto the Mount John Track. Not a bad walk as although it was steep in parts, it didn’t take too long and wasn’t anything compared to the Mueller Hut climb that we did at Mount Cook Village. My legs were still sore from that walk and I was pleased to be walking uphill rather than down (hurt more going down). Never thought I would ever say that! The views on the way up and from the top were awesome and you could see Lake Tekapo and all the surrounding mountains. The colour of Lake Tekapo was stunningly blue…amazing!!

At the top as well as the observatory there was a little café (Astro Café). It seemed weird to have a café at the top a mountain. It didn’t sell much but what it did sell hit the spot! Tasty sandwiches and tasty cakes and ice cream. I had to have yoghurt instead of ice cream though even though I am craving it…who on earth invented lent?!! All I wanted was a little spoonful! We stayed in the cafe for a good hour or so and took in the views from the top before starting our descent.

We chose to go back a different route and walked down the other side of the mountain and back along the lakeside rather than through the forest. It was nice but the legs didn’t appreciate going downhill…ouch!! It was pretty dusty and we had to dodge the horse manure but it was a really nice walk and again the views were spectacular! Tekapo is a lovely place, the sun was hot and we had a good chat all the way down and back into town. It didn’t take as long as we thought either and we were back at the hostel by 2pmish.

At the hostel we had a fruity lunch whilst watching a spot of TV and then headed out to the internet. I needed to get going on the job research front. Very scared about coming home to no job but as I still have 2 months left there isn’t a lot I can do about it at the moment except research. Keep putting the numbers on that lottery mum and dad!! You’ve got to be in it to win it!!

Once I had fried my brain with law firms I did a spot of blogging and the came off and headed back to the hostel with Nat. Nat popped out again for some fish and chips for tea whilst I cooked some pasta for my tea. Needed the carbs as a big days biking tomorrow! I then had a long shower and chilled out on the sofas for a while before heading to bed. I hoped my legs would feel better in the morning and that we would make it the 90km to Geraldine in time for the bus!!
