It was my fifth trip to Brazil and I know it won´t be the last.
It all started in Buenos Aires with a visit to a very special place called La Casa de María Tango where I met some friends from several foreign countries. La Casa de María Tango is a typical Palermo house built at the beginnings of XX century or perhaps earlier. The owners know how to make people feel good. The atmosphere is centered around tango and the passion it implies. We had dinner (the typical parrilla, or barbecue) and after that some people danced tango. I recommend this place. It´s about 20 minutes ride from downtown.
Next step: Sao Paulo. A huge city that is considered the most important economic centre in South America. There´s no doubt about it that you realize once you walk in the streets. You can do lots of things: museums, parks, art, walks, and much more. Someone said that you can either love it or hate it. First of all, it´s a big city. Big cities are full of everything for all tastes. It´s just a matter of looking for that special place you would like to see and, most probably, you´ll find it.
Then we traveled to Caraguatatuba, small town where beaches are quiet and calm.
Paraty was waiting for us: the old centre with colonial streets where details are very well taken into consideration. Trindade, at about 25 kilometres, offers lovely beaches and cozy pousadas where to stay.
The next step was Ouro Preto but, in order to get there, I had to go to Río de Janeiro to take a bus to Belo Horizonte. I had already been to Rio twice so I decided that the best way to wait for the bus was to visit Santa Teresa. It´s a very Brazilian area in Rio where you can walk and let time pass taking pictures, having a drink or just watching the locals.
Ouro Preto was waiting for me. It is a lovely city full of history where every building and every stone tell a story of the past. Slaves left a trace where blood and suffering still is felt in every corner.
Porto Seguro was the next step. Nice beaches with palm trees and colourful houses.
Arrayal de Ayuda is another option close to Porto Seguro.
Finally, San Salvador de Bahía and the true history of Brazil. I stayed in a hostel close to the beaches which was a wise idea because San Salvador is very big.
Tuesday evenings mean celebration at the Pelourinho: parades, meetings, party, life and music. Something not to be missed.
Jorge Amado found all the inspiration he needed to write his memorable books. Inspiration can be found in the streets, in every window, behind every door, in the air you can breathe.
Brazil offers loads of possibilities. Brazil is always waiting for us.
