Shave poochy poochy
Bye bye wollie! Hello 12year old Ferdi!!!!
Arggggg.... Saturday, February 21st, 2009 We went to get Ferdi's wooly face shaved this morning. The hairdresser didn't fully understand and seemed very unsure as to what we'd like. We think the fact that the beard had to be cut with the clipper confused them. Eventually they understood that they should use the clipper, but they didn't understand about the length. We just went with it and they cut Ferdi's wool very short leaving him with a nice mustache. That just looked terrible and it took some more waving of the arms to get them to take that off. Phew! Now he looks like a 12 year old! At least it will only last a week. Then the wool will return.
There were some cool 2nd hand bookshops around. We could exchange our books (2 of ours for 1 of theirs) so we got us the new Stephen King book! Cool stuff!
We said goodbye to the Lao Heritage Hotel and it's very friendly staff and took a tuk-tuk to the airport. At 14:10 we left Laos on-board a smallish aircraft with propellers for the 1h15mins flight to Hanoi.
At Noi Bai airport we grabbed a shuttle into the
Lao Air
1st prop flight in a long time old quarter of Hanoi where we got a room at Especen Hotel. The driving here is absolutely INSANE and everybody drives with their hand almost permanently on their hooter. The noise is unbelievable, but the weather is sooo much cooler!
We went for dinner and on the way we got stopped by an old lady with fruit in a traditional shoulder basket. She lifted the basket onto our shoulders and the Vietnamese hat onto our heads for a photo. She then proceeded to sell us highly overpriced fruit which we had to buy since we took the pictures. Instead of giving us change she just gave us even more overpriced fruit. Unimpressed we grabbed some dinner, but the craziness of the streets and getting ripped-off by an old lady soon drove us back to the safety and relative quiet of our room.
Hanoi is a city bursting at it's seams. It's over populated and the part that we've seen so far is absolutely filthy. We won't be here long.
Today's highlights:
1. Getting the new Stephen King book
2. Making it to Vietnam
Sunday, February 22nd, 2009 Last night was loud. This place doesn't go to
sleep before midnight and starts again at 5am, so sleep is a luxury. We're already planning our escape!
When we got outside it was drizzling. It's nice not to start sweating the moment you go outside! We went for breakfast, then walked around looking for a travel agent to book a trip up north. We found a great one and booked two awesome trips, one of which is another trek, so we got Talita a nice mini day-pack.
We visited Hoan Kiem Lake and the Ngoc Son (Jade Mountain) Temple which is situated on an island in the lake. There used to be giant turtles in the lake, but the last sighting was in 2006. We did see a huge embalmed turtle in the Temple though.
We also got a new mobile number for Vietnam. It took ages to get the GPRS to work but eventually they sorted it out for us so now we can email from our phone once more.
On our way back we heard/saw our first accident. Some poor guy's scooter had slipped from under him on the wet road and he was lights-out. His passenger was okay and the Vietnamese idea
Wollie?
Ferdi wants wollie back!!! of first-aid seems to be to rub his back until he comes around. Weird. A crowd quickly surrounded the guy and we left without seeing if he was okay.
Today's highlights:
1. Booking our trips in Northern Vietnam
2. Got a nice mini day-pack for Talita
3. Sorted out our mobile phone
