The ride down from El Chalten to El Calafate was quicker than I had thought it would be. I traveled down to Calafate with a group of four Israelis who I have become good friends with. We decided when we arrived to rent a car and head to the Perito Moreno Glacier for sunset. In fact, we decided to rent the car with five other people who would take the car from us and go for the sunrise. This really minimized the cost and allowed us to get into the park without paying the entrace fee. It really is the best idea to go for sunrise or sunset. The park is quiet and empty, maybe 8 or 10 people.
We set out around 8 o'clock. The drive took about an hour winding through the roads. The weather all day changed back and forth from sun, to down pours, to wind. It really is luck when it comes to weather in Patagonia. Luckily, the sky´s cleared for us and the glacier welcomed us with a fridgid cold breaze.
The Perito Moreno Glacier is said to be one of the last expanding glaciers in the world. It moves about 3 meters
a day and loses about the same. Its a breathtaking experience watching and listening to the ice break off the glacier and drop into the water.
