Wellington

Wellington is the capital of New Zealand and is at the south end of the North Island. Arrived on a Friday night and the town was hopping with young people crowded into bars. Sound like anywhere you know? Very touristy, lots of restaurants of all kinds and tourists from everywhere. Most of New Zealands economy is from tourism. Cars drive of the left side of the street and when you walk on the sidewalk I forget that I should also walk to the left. I haven't gotten used to Centigrade temperatures. The high today in Dunedin is 16 degrees. where we are now. Not sure how warm that will be.

Many of the towns including Wellington are located on steep hills. Took an historic cable car to the top and walked down through a lovely botanic garden. Ended up at a beautiful rose garden and started to rain so went inside a large Conservatory to get out of rain. After all that walking my foot hurt I went back to the hostel to rest. The hostel was quiet, except for the partyiers outside and we can cook there.

The next day we went to the natural history museun, Te Papa. It was free and a wonderful museum. New Zealand has no natural mammals except a few bats and therefore birds evolved to great sized and roles. The moa was a huge bird, many different kinds, some as big as a horse or bigger. Even though this is called kiwi land the people we stayed with had never seen one in the wild. I have only seen a stuffed one in a museum.
