The story begins with a phone call to a local Malay named Edmund. He is an old friend of Krista's from her study abroad in Australia. Before he could give us any advice or direction, all he said was "you are here?!...we are going to party!" he didn't give any instructions he just said we are going to meet up eat and drink. Fair enough. So we stumbled around the vast city of KL...a very westernized city with a good bit of remaining character and local flavor. This place hits both ends of the spectrum with vast malls to the opposite end of limitless street vendors. We were geared up for both. Eddie will be our guide to local food and i can manage the CPK menu on my own thanks. One spinach artichoke dip please!

So we met Eddie to get our first taste of local KL food. He took us to a few places to get a variety of noodles, soups, and teas. Every single thing that this kid ordered for us was INCREDIBLE! some of the best food i have ever eaten...period. He would order piles of food that we would all pass around and share and

this is where i was supposed to bungee...sad.
it would cost next to nothing. Perfect for a group of over budget backpackers. Eddie does his share of traveling so he knows what we were looking for. That night we turned in early because we just spent a long day on a bus and he just got back from a short trip as well.

The next morning we woke up in our triple room that is smaller than most bedrooms at home, not even enough room to fit all three of us and our backpacks. We literally had to walk on the beds to get around the room. But again, 10 ringgit(malay currency) per night is about 3 bucks...can't complain. We got a early start to walk around the city on our own. Edmund is a film director and he had some work to do on a project, so he couldn't show us around during the day. We walked a long way and it took almost all day. We went to the Petronas Towers...the largest twin towers in the world...4th largest building in the world. We wondered around to a few mosques, temples, all the fun stuff. We tried to get to a park but walking isn't always easy here because of the freeways and rivers and everything that can break a straight foot path to your destination. We were too tired of walking in intense heat that makes you sweat so much that you could ring your shirt out by the end of the day, so we went back home, showered up and headed out to met up with Eddie.

That night was the night of the 13th here...my birthday eve. Eddie said that in Malaysia they celebrate at midnight on the day before so we were in for an amazing night. Eddie made a few calls to his buddies and rounded up a crew and a destination for us. We went to some local street vendors for food which was again mind blowing! We literally eat with rats and cockroaches running around by the food stands and I am not talking field mice...i mean huge rats! Jeff and i were laughing at the fact that people would freak if they saw where we eat...but this food is the best ever and without Eddie we would have no clue where to go. Markets are normally packed with vendors...some good some bad...only locals know which is which and some have been around for 30 plus years. Eddie said he has grown up with these people...he has watched one of the noodle vendors turn into an old man over the years. Some vendors will sell food all night....the place that Eddie took us sell out in hours because people from all over KL come to eat.

After a good meal we were off to Quatro. A club that has four different room all designed around the 4 seasons. Pretty cool idea. This was not a place that was in our budget but that gets thrown out for a night on birthdays. Plus Eddie connected with his buddy Vimal, a local radio DJ that play in clubs at night and on the radio Monday through Friday. He got us on the VIP list and reserved a table. We were greeted with a bottle of Johnny Walker Black Label. I guess it is the drink of choice in these parts...so we rolled with the punches. Eddie told the bartender that it was my B-day and that he need to "kill me". the bartender filled a glass with ice and JW...looked at me and said "bottoms up"...holy mother of alcohol...this is how i am going to jump back into the game after a battle with the flu?! happy birthday me. Down the hatch. Even the bartender looked at me surprised..."wow, he really finished it." Then we made a few drinks and finish a bottle amongst friends in no time...before we could think of a new drink we had another bottle thrown at us #2...Vimal, Double D, the DJ sent another bottle over. As we looked up to the DJ both to thank him he grabbed the mic...and started in on me with his booming DJ voice..."ladies and Gentleman...we have a birthday boy in the house...all the way from California...give it up for Chris!....Ladies, he is a virgin...and he is looking for some lovin' tonight!". Son of a...he got me...i can battle with him on his own turf! Now every girl in here thinks i am a virgin looking for love...great. I'm gonna need another bottle...Poof!...bottle number 3! Oh dear god! needless to say we were getting smashed. The night went on meeting more locals...making more friends with Eddie, Double D and crew. At midnight Eddie and his friend Nadin ordered me the equivalent of a birthday cake. It was a tall glass of flaming alcohol that cascaded down the side into a glass where i sipped down the booze before igniting my head. If i had a decent hairline i might have been in trouble. That was fine...i was still hanging in there...i am not going to get put under the table by these guys...no way...i have seen more Asian kids puking then i have ever seen in my life and i am not going to be put to shame by them. i am serious...every time i went into the bathroom...a new kid was being helped by his friends out of the club.
As the night ended Double D and the other DJ Round Head...pulled me to the side to have a send off drink...you guessed it...more JW...ehhhh. I finished one glass on the rocks...passed it to them they drank one...then passed a second back to me...damn...i tried to refuse but i couldn't... these guys just paid for our drinks and showed us an amazing time...gulp...finished. Ok lets get out of here before i get handed another glass of JW! We had a bit of a drive home and i wasn't getting anymore sober. I made it to the potty safety and then began to remove all the JW that just went in. I puked. For the first time on this trip...other than the flu...but it was the first alcohol induced puke for me. Jeff and Krista had both had there time calling dinosaurs but not me...i was the champ. Not anymore. Double D and Eddie won...they got me to puke. Thank god it was on my terms and not in the club or car. The next day when they found out i puked they were impressed with there work...but more impressed with how the little guy can hold his own. They said that they didn't even know i was drunk by the end of the night....i was talk and laughing like normal. That is either good or bad...i can either handle my liqueur or i drink way too often. oh well i guess that is what the homeless and unemployed do... right?

The next day started slow...we pushed our meeting time with Eddie back from 930 to 11. I was woken up the the horrible sound of Krista's scratchy voice singing happy birthday while she was squirting me with water. pleasant. Then Jeff and Krista gave me a gift that put a huge smile on my face. A Chiodos t-shirt(one of my favorite bands). How the heck did they find a Chiodos shirt in Malaysia?! i have no clue but they did and it is awesome! Eddie then showed us to some more food and then around the city. We walked in the heat for what seemed like forever...i wasnt paying much attention because Eddie was in charge but i had been tricked by these guys to go to a bungee place on one of the towers in the city. When we got there the were going to strap me into a chair and launch me into the sky...perfect for a hang over...but the plan failed when we found out that the bungee had been moved to a location outside of the city. Bummer. Krista and Jeff had a good surprise planned but it all fell apart. Oh well, it is the thought that counts.

That night we went to Chili's for some much anticipated bottomless chips and salsa...a very hard to come by item in Asia. It wasn't eddies food but it was perfect...salad with ranch...salty chips...endless salsa...mmmm again happy birthday me! It is funny because

It was on fire but you cant tell with a camera flash
we have talked about a few things that we have missed from home and they all seemed to appear in KL. CPK, Chips and salsa, Wendy's...you name it...you can find it here.

After that snack a shower and a small cat nap, we met up with Eddie again. this time just to relax and get a drink at another club that Vimar (DJ Double D) was spinning at. It was a much more mellow night and mostly consisted of Eddie telling me i have no game as he gets girls phone numbers and i stand and watch...yeah Eddie...it helps when you speak the language...jerk! Again, Double D send drinks...beer thank god...and we dance and enjoy another good night.

Again, slow morning...do some sight seeing ...mostly around the mall in the towers where you can find anything and everything. We had a good lunch at CPK...BBQ chicken salad...spinach artichoke dip...chipotle pizza...they didn't have the Thai Chicken Pizza or that would have been ordered. Fat and lazy we went back home intending to relax and take it easy. Eddie had other plans. We met up and were informed that we were going to another club that Double D was playing

Probably saying something bad about me to the entire club.
at...this club was flashy...pretty high end like Quatro the club from the first night. So night #3 started with a some more local food and a dessert...a strange mix of shaved ice, jello, condensed milk, cocnut milk and corn. Odd but good.
After dinner Krista, Jeff, Eddie and Zoe, a fun dutch girl that was a friend of Eddies, and i, all made it to the next club. We were escorted to our upstairs VIP table and drinks...once again brought to you by Vimal aka DJ Double D. Another great night of drinks and ridiculous shout outs from Double D to Chris the virgin birthday boy. I will get even some day!

After 3 nights of drinking we were done...we didnt even want to go out on night 3 but couldn't pass up a local showing us around and Vimal insisted we go out. So once again...after getting home at around 4 am for the 3 night in a row...the morning was pretty much non-existent. In the afternoon we had to handle some travel business and then just spent the most of the day with Eddie relaxing at a local food spot...and laughing about the good times we just

had.

Without Eddie, Vimal, and Zoe we would not have had the experience we had. It was a week to remember...a birthday to remember...friends to remember. Thanks to all of you! Thank you for the hook ups and the laughs! Thanks for the great birthday!
