Nadia!
Was nice to see my friend Nadia, who lives in Halifax This week has been our first week of our new itinerary, so we’ve been getting used to the new schedule. It was also a SUPER easy week work-wise, as we had 5 youth onboard - bit of a difference from last week’s 60! We each worked less hours in Kids Korner, but also performed extra duties as cruise staff (hosting karaoke, helping with crowd control during immigration, swiping passenger cards as they exit ship, etc.) I’ve had lots of extra time on my hands so I’ve been doing lots of knitting, as well as watching the first season of “Heroes” that I borrowed from the crew bar. (GREAT show for anyone who watches it!)
Steph, Nicole, and I have been in Basic Safety training all week, so every day we had a couple hours of training. This week we covered first aid, as well as firefighting part 1. Next Monday, we head into Halifax to do firefighting part 2, and fight a real fire! Because of training, we had less time in the ports, but we were still able to get to 3 of the 4.
First stop - Halifax, Nova Scotia. I was actually able to meet up
Halifax, Nova Scotia
Sun setting as we leave Halifax Harbour with my friend Nadia, with whom I worked in Honduras, and lives in Halifax. She met us just off the pier, and took us to mine and Nicole’s respective banks so that we could deposit our first pay that we received. MUCH easier (and cheaper) than having to wire it home! We then went for dinner at an Irish pub, and then had to head back to the ship. It was a short, but nice visit, as Nadia left the next day to go teach in Korea! I’m glad I caught her just before! We hope to also visit Peggy’s Cove in the future.
Second stop - Bar Harbor, Maine. I got off by myself at this one, just to see what was in port. There were tons of cute little shops and many restaurants offering lobster. We’ve agreed to take advantage of this by the end of this itinerary. Bar Harbor was very pretty. I got some nice pics, and loved the changing colours of the leaves. The nice fall weather was relaxing. I do love fall.
Third stop - St. John, New Brunswick. We didn’t see much here, other than the downtown shopping area. We walked
Loading the Tenders in Bar Harbor
Because it's too shallow for us to get right into Bar Harbour, we set anchor further out and then load passengers into these tender boats to take them to shore around the mall and the streets. We did the majority of our shopping at the Bargain store, as our main objectives were warm sweaters and ketchup chips! They don’t have ketchup chips in the States. Nicole, Steph, and I each bought 2 bags! haha
Final stop - Boston, Massachusetts. Because we had training in the afternoon, and because it requires a shuttle or taxi from the harbour to get to anything in Boston, we weren’t able to see anything this time. We got off the ship to see if we could find anything in harbour but there was nothing but a tiny little store in a dark stairway. We’ve heard there’s great shopping in Boston. We also hope to possibly visit Harvard or do the Freedom Trail.
We continue to make lots of new friends with other crew members. Jimy (Peru) and Humberto (Columbia) have become good friends of ours, who we hang out with lots.
We were supposed to get a new youth counsellor from Ukraine today, but it turns out she’s been sent to another ship that is short of YCs. Nicole, Steph, and I have to switch rooms again today as well. It’s a
Scenary
I loved the view pain in the butt but apparently the people at shore side in Miami keep booking people in our rooms, and there’s no way to control it? However, this will be my last time moving, as I am moving down into Lisa's spot in the crew cabins with Katelyn. Lisa leaves in two weeks, and is sharing a room with her boyfriend anyways, so they're moving me in now. Will be nice not to have to move anymore. I'll take new pics soon to share!
Ship life continues to be entertaining. We’re still having a hard time believing we’ve been here a month already. Time flies when you’re having fun!
