After the non-stop rain yesterday, we were extremely lucky today to have relatively clear skies for our return to Machu Picchu. In fact, other than a few sprinkles when the bus first dropped us off, it was dry the entire time we were there. I am so happy that we waited until today to go back.
Since we already walked around most of the area on Monday, today we decided to hike up to the Guardhouse, located at the highest point just inside the entrance (and up about 200 steps). You can see all of Machu Picchu from this point, and it really is the best view (unless you choose to hike up Waynapicchu Mountain). We also noticed from the top that there were alpacas grazing in the center, so after enjoying the (foggy) view and taking some pictures, we made our way to the center to take pictures of the alpaca as well.
We wandered around for a bit more and soaked up the scenery before heading back to the exit and catching the bus back to Aguas Calientes. As soon as we got to the bus it started sprinkling again... our timing really couldn´t have been better
today!
We arrived back in Aguas Calientes at about 11:30 and now have about 3 hours to kill before the train ride back to Cusco. Now we´re off to try some Mexican food at a place located next to the bus stop and then it´s back to our hotel in Cusco.
Tomorrow we fly to Puerto Maldonado!
