We have left Beijing to travel to Shanghai by night train, quite an experience. We entered a train cart with 4 beds, we had the upper beds and they were quite comfortable. We arrived early morning and made our way to our new home for the next couple of days, Motel 168.
In the afternoon we strolled around the city, we are in an area called Huangpu, it has great areas like People square (large square) and Nanjing road for shopping. It only took us minutes to get really frustrated with the Chinese in this area, first of all, they are
everywhere, they make a lot of noise with there little scooters, bicycles and cars and the biggest problem is that they have a sight problem. It doesn't matter if a traffic light is red, yellow or green they will take the right away and run you over if they get the chance. Fortunately we figured out that taxis here are just as cheap as in Beijing therefore we were safe for the rest of our stay.
At night we had dinner at the famous Crystal Jade (according to our travel book) an authentic Chinese restaurant in the area
called French Concession - Xintiandi, originally designated for the French, now a popular spot and it has a nice area with restaurants and bars.
The second day in Shanghai we had rain, lots of rain. Didn't do much during the day, but at night we met an old friend of Lennard's, from culinaire school, who is currently managing one of the hippest clubs in Shanghai,
Lounge 18. Talking to him we learnt that Shanghai is not one of the most cultural places to visit, but the nightlife is booming. Every month new clubs open and close and try to differentiate themselves in this fast growing economy. We had an excellent night out, started with dinner with Onno and another Dutch couple, Thijs en Marije, who were visiting Onno as well. After dinner we headed out to Lounge 18 and Onno had us setup with table service. The atmosphere was great and the music was really good, finally no American hiphop.
The next day a bit of a hangover, no rain, just a lot of sun. We went to The Bund, the most famous tourist attraction of Shanghai. The Bund runs along the Huangpu River and is the best place
to enjoy Shanghai's skyline, if you want to cross the river you can take the metro, but we decided to take the sightseeing tunnel under the river. This was an experience, we were quite excided and had to pay RMB 50, same as the wall, getting in the tunnel, it was like a big Christmas tree from beginning to end. Definitely the worst tourist attraction so far. In the evening we had dinner with Marije and Thijs in one of the best restaurants in town Shintori, great spot.
The last two days we just took it easy, we hang out at Onno's place, visited People's square where parents were trying to find a partner for their son or daughter (who needs match.com) and visited the fake market (guess what's for sale). We are all packed now and ready to leave, tonight we will fly out to the Philippines for a stop over and the following day Palau.
The next couple of weeks we don't expect to have any internet connection, so be patient.
Skyline
Waarschijnlijk komende twee weken radiostilte vanuit the Pacific, vanwege weinig internet mogelijkheden.
