We had been rather unsure what to expect when we booked a six week tour across africa with Budget Expeditions. It seemed like the best and cheapest way to see some amazing countries (Namibia, Botswana, Zambia, Malawi and Tanzania). On the other hand we were concerned about being herded mindlessly across the continent with a bus on a sort of slightly more exotic Club Med/18-30/school trip. Joining our tour group at the Big Blue Backpackers in Cape town we werent reassured to be greeted with the words “so youŕe the Married Couple”. Up until that point we'd thought of ourselves as two disctinct people with seperate personalities who happened to be in love and decide to have a big party last year and get married. Now we were one undistinguishable being known as the Married Couple..
But actually our fears were unfounded - the group is small -10 people, over half are in couples, there is a nice mix of nationalitites with Brits, Aussies, Canadians and a Kiwi. It is early days still and it is hard to say if this type of trip suits us. So far the biggest disadvantage is that you are on a fixed itinerary so if you are travelling that day you have to be up on time whether you feel like it or not. Our trip is 80% camping and the first night was brutal. During the day you wouldnt know its winter but the nights are a different story all together. We were frozen by the time we had to get up at 5am in the pitch black and take down our tents - the bus with no heating wasn't much warmer and we were cold until we got some proper sun later that day. We have invested in two very attractive wooly hats which we are wearing in bed (but never outside the tent as we look like a pair of village idiots). It's getting warmer as we travel north - our first night in Namibia wasn so bad - It's getting warmer as we travel north -And our second night wasn't so bad as Eric obligingly developed a fever and kept Zoe nice and warm - even if she did complain about his shaking. All seems better now so no need to worry!
