Preface:

The International Year of Planet Earth's Africa Launch in Tanzania May 8th and 9th, 2008, gave hundreds of scientists, students and others an opportunity to discuss important issues concerning the future of our world.

IYPE organizers asked filmmaker Dan Molina, former NBC Chicago Bureau Chief, to produce a short documentary concerning the event. Bill Megalos, whose credentials include directing, teaching and many other aspects of television and film, was the cinematographer, while I served as the associate producer.

The venue of the conference couldn't have been better. Situated in Arusha between Mt. Kilimanjaro and Mt. Meru, the Ngurdoto Mountain Lodge located on a coffee plantation was the perfect setting for discussions about protecting Nature. The buildings were enhanced by lush landscaping.

The reception desk was the most beautiful I've ever seen—and I've sold furniture for years. The counter top consisted of sliced tree trunks, while the front had animals carved from ebony, rosewood and other exotic woods. It was very long, and there was another in the building across the driveway.

I recommend these extraordinary photographs to anyone interested in this area. Ellen has a remarkable eye for capturing the whimsical and unusual, ie storks on the roof tops.

Well done Ellen! Your work is an "electronic version" of the physical northern Tanzania. People, culture, weather, wildlife and geomorphology have been correctly articulated.

I love being involved in international projects. Next month I'll receive an award for Global Impact which is "intended for a special individual who has been a catalyst for productive global change." I'm quite flattered.
