Lovely Ladies Partying in Addis
vodka jelly, fruit punch and dancing till the wee hours! 10 things that make me happy OK, so you may have noticed I have been totally rubbish at producing any blog entries recently, whilst Al has been busy producing epics. So I’ve been trying to motivate myself, I’ve tried at least 3 times, but now realise, I need to start simple, so I’m going back to basics
(Not in order of priority!)
1. Your emails and calls, the comments on our blog You probably don’t realise how much these things mean to us, it’s so good to hear from you, hear what you’re up to and all the news, it’s lovely when you check your mail and there’s a new email or comment, it makes you all seem so much closer.
2. New Friends The new interesting, inspiring, intelligent, challenging, supportive and fun people I’ve met since I got here.
3. Alan J Mercer Isn’t it cool when you find someone to share journeys like this with?
4. Running Not doing so much of it these days, but have tried a few times with Al recently, I’ve actually started dreaming about it, which I am sure is because I haven’t been able to get
out as much as I’d like.
5. Simplicity I suppose one of the reasons we wanted to leave the UK and work abroad is to remind ourselves of the things in life we really care about. Sometimes to do that you have to take away all the clutter and the noise and have the opportunity to challenege the way you live your life, your ideas and beliefs about the world outside your front door.
6. Music Aren’t iPods great? Recently been able to connect them up to some speakers. Singing and dancing in your front room always lifts your spirits.
(My iPod also has Solitaire, which I’m totally addicted to!)
7. Visiting local schools There is some really good stuff happening and some fantastic dedicated teachers and students. I’ve been privileged enough to take part in a number of end of terms celebrations in the past couple of weeks and it reminds me what it’s all about. It was great to be a part of celebrating everyone’s success over the past year. At one club celebation I went to I was expecting to sit at the back and mind my own business, but I became a special

One of my best friends in Asossa guest and was asked to hand out certificates to everyone in the club, they also had a photographer there and I had to have my picture taken with every single student - I must have looked hilarious and felt a bit of a fraud to be honest, but it was great fun and I felt very honoured to have been part of the afternoon. I chuckled all the way home.
8. Stuff you find on the internet - Al found this, he says it makes him smile, he shared it with me yesterday, it made me smile, I hope it makes you smile too.
9. Kids OK, you’re having one of those days, works tough, you’re tired, and you hear a little voice across the road, ‘Ferenji’, ‘Ferenji’, and you turn and shout hello and wave, and you get a big smile and a wave back. They never get bored of it, they never get tired of you just waving back, they always smile, it helps brighten my day and remind me adults are mad and things aren’t so bad.
10.Dawsons Creek I'm not going to say anything else, I'll only embarrass myself more than
In the office
Some of my favourite work colleagues I already have
You’ve probably realised from the blogs Al as been writing already much has happened in the past few months since we got here, my sister reminded me we’ve already spent almost a quarter of our time here. I don’t think I’ve ever wanted to cry so often in my life (someone on the training in Birmingham taught me I should go with it when I want to - I’m still learning!) and not just the sad stuff but the happy stuff too.
Anyway it’s Sunday afternoon, I’ve had a glass of wine, and maybe it’s just one of those days when you just have to get it off your chest. Another of our friends is returning to the UK shortly, I’ll really miss her and I suppose the reason I’ve written this blog is because I’ve been feeling a bit sad about some of the changes we’ve experienced, the people we miss and maybe the uncertaintly of what’s to come. These things remind me of the good stuff and maybe it’s good to share.............................
