Day 6
After our long bus journey yesterday we wanted to have a leisurely time today. We luckily had selected a new guest hostel opposite the Mekong near the bus stop after running the gauntlet of the inevitable touts. We seem to have selected the best place in town at $5 a night. U Hong II. New and clean. The host has been working in the tourism business in this relatively remote town for five years and built a wonderful service. It is only small, three double rooms, an elegant cafe and tourist information office and service. Delicious traditional and western food prepared with flair by two charming cooks in a pristine kitchen .

Today, from the options offered we first went with him to the market and bought a fish and various other things. Then Connie and Rosie went off cycling (I do not have that skill, especially not here with rough roads, large muddy puddles, garbage everywhere and all kinds of animals and conveyances weaving in and out.) So I washed my new sarongs ...2 for three dollars then $1 for a sew lady in the market to seam them on an old treadle machine.

Then we were

off with me on the back of the motor scooter again, to our host's village a few kilometers away to make lunch with the fish, stopping many times to look and take photos. It seems a very content and prosperous place in its own traditional Cambodian way. A lot of corn is grown, as well as many kinds of fruit and vegetables. Banana trees everywhere. And lots of chooks, goats, pigs and cattle. Produce is transported by ox cart. And of course fish from the river .

His housewas built by his grandfather...traditional, high on stilts, high ceiling ,bamboo floor
and and timber walls with gaps between to allow ventilation. Cool and lovely. Cooking over a wood fire in the open kitchen. He and his sister made the lunch. Then we were joined by his father, brother in law little daughter and a few curious but delightfu tiny kids from next door.

Then back through the rain for a nap under the fan. The others have gone for another bike ride to get their $2's worth. Then we will make our way over to the riverbank for a beer as we watch the sunset over the mighty Mekong.
