I go out walking...

Tonight, since it was a nice day and the rain had finally stopped, my roommate Sarah and I went out walking to Columbia Hall to check on my car, over to the State House a few blocks away, around the Horseshoe, down by a little coffee and catering shop to snag a pic of Ingrid and Bogie, up to the building where we work, across to the library, and back to Rutledge Hall where we live (also on the horse shoe). I think the pictures kind of speak for themselves of the beauty of the South, but one that stood out the most to me was the statue at the State House. In the picture, behind the statue, is the Confederate flag made of white stars and the red background and blue stripes. Although I don't support the Confederacy, Sarah and I took pictures of it and thought the statue resembled man-kind turning their back on the past (the Confederacy) and looking towards a new dawn (since the street in front of it was lit up from the sunset). I wonder if anyone else thinks that too.

Nevertheless, even though some parts of the South are extremely racist, even though Sarah and I sometimes get odd looks from unknowing strangers when we go out walking with our twin roommates, and even though one local restaurant is so proud of its Confederate past that many people of colored skin will not go anywhere near it, the South still has a sophistication and proud appeal to it. And that's why I took these pictures...
