Coming Into The Golden Gate Bridge !
It was very foggy but Tim drove the motor home over the bridge like a pro ! After very little sleep on the pull-out couch, in the Circuit City parking lot, Tim and I woke up, showered in the motor home and started looking for a place to settle into for the next day or two. We let the girls sleep while we tried to figure out where we were going and what all we were going to do in San Francisco. I opened up the computer and started searching. Yellowpages.com lead me straight to the Candlestick RV Park. That's Candlestick as in Candlestick Football Stadium where the 49'ers play. I called the 1-800 number and talked to the manager and he said they had plenty of availability so we headed right over. He also said that basically we didn't have a choice since it's absolutely the only RV park or campground in San Francisco !! In order to get there, we had to cross over the infamous Golden Gate Bridge. It was a really foggy morning which just added to my apprehension of crossing the bridge. As we start getting closer, I wake the girls so they don't miss "the big crossing". As we approach the beginning of the bridge, Tim had to slow down because the
fog was impairing his visibility and I'm about to have a heart attack ! There was no turning back now, we were on the bridge !! I'm not sure if it was because I couldn't see the water below or what, but I actually handled it really well. The Golden Gate Bridge is not near as long as I had thought and it wasn't that bad at all. There's one thing for sure about this trip and that is the fact that I am overcoming some long lived fears and it actually feels good. We continued on until Magellan finally gets us to Candlestick RV Park. It is right across the street from the stadium in an old parking lot and the entire park is set up on concrete. This was something new for us, but hey, we were not in the country anymore, this is definitely the city ! Once we got settled in the four of us head up to the main office to find out how we can get into town. The manager was quick to tell us that they didn't like their campers walking down to the bus stop because we weren't in the best part
San Francisco !!
This is coming through downtown San Francisco ! of town. It was Sunday and the car rental places were all closed so that only left us one option, call a cab. He picked up the phone and hailed us a cab who arrived within fifteen short minutes. We were off to Pier 39 to buy tickets for the Alcatraz tour and see what else there was we could get into. We arrived at the Pier only to be disappointed by finding out that we couldn't get tickets to Alcatraz until Tuesday at lunchtime. This meant we had to stay in San Francisco a night longer than expected, but the girls were very adamant about seeing it so we decided to buy the tickets and stay. We walked around the Pier for a while sightseeing and shopping as the day slowly passed. It was a really neat place with lots of little specialty shops and tons of coffee and eateries. Tim was a real trooper and agreed that we could have lunch at Bubba Gump's Restaurant even though he despises shrimp and seafood. He opted for the BBQ sandwich, since it was the only thing that didn't have shrimp in it, and he said it was great. The atmosphere
Beautiful House in San Francisco
This house is perfect for Jason & Heidi ! was awesome and we had a perfect view of Alcatraz and Angel Island. After lunch and a little more browsing we decided to take bus # 9X over to Chinatown. The bus had to be safer than getting back in the cab with "Crazy Ray". After the ride he gave us to the Pier, I understand how he got to the RV Park to pick us up so quickly. He drives like a maniac ! With the help of a young lady on the bus, we get off in the middle of Chinatown and boy was that an experience. As we begin walking up the street, the girls and I look over as Tim is pointing out a box of dead turtles for sale ! Next, we came upon the dead chickens with their heads still attached and then came the whole duck's on rotisserie sticks being cooked in the window. Our trip through Chinatown was very interesting and very educational. We learned a lot about how the Chinese cook and the different foods that they eat. After an hour or so there we decided that we wanted to head back down to Pier 39 and hang out until 7:00
The Streets of San Francisco
All of the houses are either attached or very very close together ! p.m. when we were supposed to meet for the haunted house tour. Kayla & Emily thought it would be good for all of us to walk back to the pier instead of taking the bus so that's what we did. We walked about 15 blocks all the way back to the pier. The weather was beautiful and it was a nice walk and the exercise was very refreshing. I started reading the brochure about the haunted house tours and discovered that the entire three hour tour consisted of walking from house to house. We all looked at each other and decided that we had walked enough for the day and we wanted to do something a little more relaxing. I continued looking at the travel brochure and found a two hour sunset cruise that went around Alcatraz, Angel Island and Sausalito and it was leaving in about 45 minutes. We all thought the cruise sounded like something we would enjoy so we headed over to Pier 43 1/2 and boarded the Red and White boat. We cruised around for two hours listening to live music and relaxing as we circled the islands and watched the sun set. Our first day
Kayla & Emily at Pier 39 !
Walking through the pier ! in San Francisco ended with a cab drive back to the motor home where we stayed up for several hours playing Phase 10 !! Tim redeemed himself by winning a game and Kayla logged her second win into the books. Tomorrow we'll see what the other half of San Francisco has to offer and then we're off to Alcatraz on Tuesday.
