Breakfast with our favorite waitress
The start of a new trip is always exciting, usually coupled with a little anxiety. Where will this adventure take us and what experiences will we have in the next two months as we trek up to Alaska?

Adventure is good for the soul and keeps life interesting. What does the future hold? I guess we will find out one day at a time. This is the first of those days.

We started our first day by getting up at 4:00 am. We walked a mile and then went to Dave’s Diner in Middleboro, MA for a farewell breakfast with our favorite waitress, Jo. We were on the road by 6:00 am, heading northwest. This is the general direction in which we will be traveling for the next 3 weeks. We have a date this afternoon in North Tonawanda, NY with friends we met in Florida this past winter, Dave and Ellen. They have invited us to dinner and to spend the night. How absolutely gracious of them.

Dave and I stopped every 2 hours to stretch our legs and to switch drivers. We drove Route 90, the Mass Pike and the New York Thruway. The Erie Canal

runs alongside the highway in places and the locks look very interesting. We made lunch at one of the service areas along the Thruway. We arrived at Dave and Ellen’s around 2:00 pm. We had a delicious steak dinner with them and then we decided to keep on traveling. As much as they wanted us to stay overnight, they understood that we wanted to get a few miles in before calling it a night. We bid these two very special people good bye and headed back out on Route 90 West.

We drove until just before the PA line and found a site at Lake Erie State Park, which was directly on the Lake. The park is in Brocton, NY. Dave was born in and is from Brockton, MA. Sticking to our plan of walking every morning and night, we strolled around the campground and along the beach. There is a lot of work being done to control an erosion problem along the lake’s edge. I got some lovely pictures of a beautiful sunset over the Lake. It was lights out at 9:00 pm for us.
