look at this magnificent axis!
our architect teachers are always babbling about axis-es. so yesterday we went to caprarola, some little village to the north of rome. we went there to look at the palazzo of the farnese family, who were a bunch of really rich people who lived in rome and had a pope amongst their lot. they also have a palace here in rome, but it is very rarely open, maybe twice a year. it was open a couple months ago, and one of my professor's wife saw me on the street and ran up to me to tell me this, but the line was really long so i just got gelato and went home instead. i can imagine what it looks like. alot of old paintings and furniture, baroque architecture. been there, done that. anyway, caprarola was actually nice b/c we didn't look at any churches. the farnese villa (meaning palace in the country, with gardens) was hardcore about their decorations. all the rooms had frescoes all over the walls and ceilings. i didn't take any pictures b/c i wasn't allowed to. my favorite room was the world room. on the walls they had these maps of each continent and one of the whole world painted, and they were fairly accurate
considering how old they were. i wouldn't mind living in that room. and thet had a really elaborate garden, with lots of hedges and fountains and statues. we couldn't go to the top half of the garden b/c some spanish people were filming a movie there. we weren't suppose to take any pictures of this exciting fiasco, but i took one on the sly. its not very good.
then we went to some other village. i forget the name of it. we went into one room in the palace here, and it had some frescos on the walls. imagine that. the gardens were spectacular though! there were lots and lots of hedges that jiggled in a very amusing manner, and lots of hallowed out trees that we attempted to shove ourselves into, sometimes successfully, sometimes not. oh, we also saw this really cool old tree in the woods that im pretty sure had a portal to another world in it. however, emilio (my art history teacher) was very quickly heading towards the bus, so i did not get a chance to transport. alas.
firstly, i'd want to say that all that about me licking my piece of cake
part of a garden
look how lush this grass is, considering that it is the beginning of november. so i wouldn't have to share was a joke. there was nobody there to share with, actually.
secondly, i want to give another shout out to the bestest friends a girl could ask for, claire and megan. they managed to get my address from me without making me suspicious of anything, and then surprise me with the best care package ever! they sent me a taco bell dinner box thingy (!!!!), pepperidge farm chocolate chip cookies, a cat stevens mixed cd very aptly entitled "cat-aclysmic", a card from each of them, and bean dip! i was very happy. i also got a data cd from my friend tyler with copies of some my most favorite music, and i bought a cd player, so between the efforts of tyler and my friend kasey (who sent me some cds a few weeks ago), i'm finding life without my ipod not too bad.
things are about to get intense. the schedule for the next three weekends is as follows: venice, vienna, munich. so get ready for some excitement to the max Xtreme.
good news for me. my roommate rachael has decided to join me in london. my original plan was
to fly into the same airport that i will be flying back to america from, find a bench, sit on it for the 24+ hours of layover all by myself, reading and re-reading to kill a mockingbird in order to stay awake, come back to the united states and eat tacos. but since rachael will be with me, i'll get to take a few naps while in london! this makes me really happy.
EDIT: so some time has elasped since i started working on this entry. the tacos have been made and eaten, and indeed they were delicious. i had four and thought i was gonna pop. i took a picture, and i'll put it up soon. keri, laura, and samantha also enjoyed these (note to megan: i KNOW you gave me limitations on who i could share with, but samantha's a really great roommate, and she made me pancakes the other day, so i didn't think you would mind if she had a taco. i really couldn't eat anymore, anyway.)
NOTES TO FRIENDS
CHRIS: I'm so glad to hear from you! i've been wondering about you and i hope everything is superb for you. don't worry, i'll
be back before you know it.
DEVON: don't worry devon, i'm very pumped up about all the shows you are going to, and i'm a little bit jealous. there are lots of shows i'm missing due to being out of the country (one of my favorite bands came to rome, but on the weekend i was in switzerland!!!), and i'm upset by this. so good job buddy. rock out in my place.
KELLY: what's chase's email?
EVERYBODY: would anybody like to join me for a feast of tacos at approximately 10 pm on the evening of december 20th in tulsa, oklahoma? my grandparents will be spending the night in tulsa with me, but if anybody would like to take me to taco bell/taco bueno for some good food and good catching up, and then return me to my grandparents hotel, i'd be quite joyous.
