Day 206

Obfuscator writes: When we left our motel in the morning, we had a few Amarillo stops in mind for the day. First we headed a bit west of the city, to what is known as the Cadillac Ranch. Here, in the middle of a big empty field, sit 10 old Cadillacs. Well, perhaps sit isn't the right term. They're all buried nose first in a row in the big empty field. That's not necessarily the most impressive thing about the Cadillac Ranch. Each of these Cadillacs is covered from top to bottom with graffiti. The owner of the ranch invites any and all to come with spray-paint and cameras to decorate his Cadillacs, and sure enough, the same morning we visited, there were others doing the same. We picked up a couple of cans on the ground, found them not empty, and added our marks.

Next, we drove south toward Palo Duro Canyon State Park. This park is about 20 miles south of Amarillo, and I've seen it called the “Grand Canyon of Texas.” The first views we got of it didn't impress me too much, but the further we got into it, the more I could see the comparison. It's not nearly as immense or staggering as the Grand Canyon, but it is pretty darned big, and it is quite pretty. It has many layers of rock, each with their own color and texture. We took a six mile hike toward Lighthouse Point, which is one of the better known formations in the park. It was pretty neat, and the hike was good. The only unfortunate part was that it turned out to be such a cloudy day, since it made a lot of the lovelier photo ops a lot worse.

When we got out of Palo Duro, we headed toward Oklahoma. Having looked extensively at the map of the Texas Panhandle, we determined that there just weren't enough other interesting things there to justify staying any longer. Late in the afternoon, we pulled into a campground at Foss State Park, near Foss OK. We also checked out a couple of little parks in Foss that were kind of interesting. Foss State Park had decent facilities and didn't mind us having a fire, unlike all the parks in Texas, so that was a pleasant surprise. We cooked our dinner and watched stuff on the laptop, and went to bed.
