Greek Bronze A NAM
This figure was in the courtyard. March 1, 2008 - Our last day. We take the Metro to the Omonia stop and walk about 6-7 blocks to the National Archaeological Museum. This part of the city is among Athens' oldest and most worn districts. It’s one of the neighborhoods which has seen the most political debating/protesting, dated back as early as the 1970s. But the NAM is one of the most important museums in the world, it houses beautiful and influential works from the great Bronze Age to the Golden Age of Classical Athens. Mostly very large statues, some of the largest I have ever seen. I was most impressed with the bronze works here. I think a trip to Athens wouldn’t be complete without a visit to NAM. There is also a very cool lounge and outdoor cafe in the museum.
Since it’s our last day we back track through some of our favorite places and do a little shopping. We saw no rain and only a few clouds one day. It’s lovely to just sit at one of the outdoor cafes and people watch. It’s Saturday and the local population has doubled, everyone is outdoors the weather is perfect. We see many families enjoying
the day and everyone seems relaxed and happy.
While we were in Athens, Apokries the Greek Orthodox Carnival was in full swing. Apokries begins 58 days before Easter, and there are many festivities. In Athens, the colorful celebration centers in Plaka, where street are packed with children of all ages dressed in costumes, singing, dancing and laughing. The biggest party was on the night before we were to fly home. We felt like this was a wonderful send off. The street were really alive with action. We made one last stop at the bakery and headed back to the Herodion. Tomorrow, is a long flight home.
