Jaisalmer Fort
The Fort at Night Jaisalmer
The next leg of our travels took us deep into the Great Thar Desert, to the Fortified city of Jaisalmer.
It is a truly unique place with an atmosphere all of its own and is frequently listed in the top 100 places to visit before you die lists!
Many of the population of the city still live inside the vast forts ancient walls and it is a wonderful experience meandering through the narrow streets and alleys past stalls and markets with people going about their daily business.
We spent 4 nights in Jaisalmer but one of those nights was spent camping in the sand dunes of the Thar Desert as part of a 2 day camel trek.
The sound of the Camel herders songs around the camp fire, under the starriest sky you will ever see will be a memory i will certainly treasure.
All in all Jaisalmer was a fantastic place to visit and one I would recommend to anyone.
Udaipur
After Jaisalmer we ventured south to Udaipur, the Lake City, home of the famous Lake Palace and the Bond film Octopussy which is played nightly at most bars throughout town!
The journey was a long
Jaisalmer Fort
The Fort Entrance one first by overnight train back to Jodhpur and then by shared taxi with a nice Cockney chap named Jeremy who we met on our camal safari in Jaisalmer.
The taxi was a very good way of travelling as it meant we avoiding another bone ratling bus journey and also allowed us to take in Ranakpur Temple on the way, one of the Largest Jian Temples in the world with over 1000 uniquely carved marble pillars holding it up!
Once we arrived in Udaipur we were shown to our room which was a superb corner room with great views over the lake and across to the Lake Palace.
Our days were filled with leisurely walks, shopping, drinking and eating mixed with a little local sightseeing to such places as The City Palace and Monsoon Palace both great places to see and both featured in Octopussy!
We also had a great pedalo trip around Lake Pichola circling the Lake Palace trying to sneak a peak to see if there were any celebrities staying in the hotel that it now holds, but alas we saw none!
Udaipur was a much more relaxed place to spend time in than other cities in Rajasthan

Enjoying the Evening Sunshine! and we enjoyed our time greatly but eventually we had to leave, on a 14 hour coach journey no less!
Onwards to Kerala in South India via Mighty Mumbai!
