Arrived in Santiago on January 16th after a flight from Auckland. As we only had a week in Chile before moving on we had to decide whether to head south to the mountain and lakes areas, stay in the city, or spend some time at the coast.

We spent a couple of days exploring the city, in addition to recovering from the long flight and adjusting to the new time. Although both of us would have loved to have gone further south to the countryside region, it would have taken 2 full days of travelling to get there and back, and so we would not have had much time there at all. Therefore, we decided to spend the following few days on the west coast in a small town called El Quisco - only a couple of hours away from Santiago by bus.

We did our own sightseeing walking tour around Santiago itself with the help of the Lonely Planet. Good to see the city, but once we´d seen the main sights - Government buildings, statues, water fountains etc, it felt very much like any other large city, and we were happy enough to go on to visit the coast.

El Quisco turned out to be a small resort which was generally very quiet during the day and then turned into a party town at night. It had a lovely beach, but other than that there wasn´t much around.

From El Quisco we took a day trip to Algorropo - another coastal town about 20 minutes by bus from El Quisco. Here we walked along the front to the (non functional) lighthouse before going out on a boat to see huge numbers of pelicans flying around, and a few penguins.

Having spoken to several other travellers in and around our hostel, and hearing about the parts of Chile that they have been to it is definitely a country I would come back to in the future to see more of.

(The computers in South America seem to be a bit temperamental, and so I will try to get some photos up at some point, but may not manage to)
