Brisbane
Took another Greyhound to Brisbane on Sun 20th for a quick 2 day 1 night tour of the city. It's pretty small so managed to fit everything we wanted to do into those days. Took a stroll down Queen St the first day (where all the shops are) then did our usual thing of scouting out a Thai restaurant for dinner! Spend the rest of the night in the hostel bar, where we felt a little old amongst the students of the town!
Monday we took a trip out to Lone Pine Koala sanctuary. Scorching hot day! Saw millions of koalas lazing in the trees - they really smell! They had lots of other animals too - dingoes, wombats, snakes (world's deadliest), tiny little ponies, goats and other random things. We got to feed the kangaroos too which was pretty cool! Saw a sheepdog show (which was nothing compared to the Sutton ones!) and also a birds of prey show.
Later in the afternoon, Vic went to see the Andy Warhol exhibition at the Art museum whilst Sel went to the natural history museum. All very interesting stuff. Glad we managed to fit in a bit of
culture before we hit Surfer's!
Surfer's Paradise
Surfer's is exactly how it looks on the postcards, very commercialised and a great beach for surfing (funnily enough). Looked a lot like the USA - even one of the schools was 'Miami Primary School'! Went to an Italian for dinner, food not too great but copious amounts of red wine made up for it!
Stayed in an extremely hot hostel! No air conditioning, just a floor fan. Way too many bugs (which looked like small cockroaches) for our liking. Glad it was just one night. We'd seen it all in a day anyway, wandered round the shops (our favourite passtime) and sat on the beach for a while getting covered in sand because it was so windy!
Byron Bay
Light relief from Surfer's, Bryon Bay is a laid-back hippy town with some beautiful beaches and a very scenic coastline. Arrived late-ish on the 22nd, restaurants too expesive for the likes of us backpackers, so grabbed pizza and headed to The Rails for a beer. Wednesday we took a look around the town, lots of interesting more individual shops. Headed to Cheeky Monkey's with some English guys we
met for $5 dinner and cheap drinks. Lots of random drinking games, including Goldfish racing! Thursday we took a walk along the headland up the lighthouse and the most easterly point of Australia. Fabulous views of Cape Byron (see pics) and lots of breeze which was much needed in the blazing sun!
Had a lucky escape with the Greyhound to Sydney - they booked Sel onto a different bus to V (which was rather silly). But we didn't realise til the bus had actually left. Luckily there was a spare seat on the one V was booked onto so Sel was not left stranded in Byron for the night!
