Day 146

Obfuscator writes: J had a couple of days off work, and we figured that since we were in Denver anyway, we should check off another state capitol. We found parking right across the street, and went on in. After a couple of capitols where we didn't have to go through security, it was annoying to have to do so again, but I guess that's what you get when you get back into states with actual populations. The capitol is fairly standard looking on the outside, more or less resembling the nation's capitol. Apparently it's the third highest capitol in the country, being at a lower elevation than only Santa Fe, New Mexico, and Cheyenne, Wyoming.

On the inside, it's really pretty. Apparently they did their best to use all materials from within Colorado, and there's some beautiful marble and onyx and some really red rock that was very lovely. There's tours that take you up in the dome as well, and that was nice, if not nearly as impressive as the dome in Kansas. That said, the view from the dome in Denver is a heck of a lot more impressive, with Denver just being a more impressive town than Topeka, and the mountains being there to boot. We went into the House, Senate, and looked in on the Supreme Court chambers. All were nice, as I guess I've come to expect.

From there we wandered a bit in the downtown, toward the City and County building. There's a fair number of cool sculptures in the parks around the capitol, and we had a good time browsing them. There's also some rather funky looking buildings there, especially the Denver Art Museum. Out in front of the Art Museum, we found a pair of giant cows, which we felt compelled to climb. The larger, reclining, cow was certainly the easier of the two. The smaller, standing one, required a bit of the Obfuscator-Onaxthiel climbing technique to get up.

We snagged some lunch at a “Brooklyn Deli” which was all right, and headed out of the city, and toward Vail. When we got to Vail, we took the nickel tour J was able to give us, and saw all the cool little shops and the covered bridge, and took a gondola ride up to a pretty nifty spot in the mountains. Later, we hit the bars with him and his buddies, and had a good time.

Lessons learned: Don't take the parking across the street from the capitol. It's ludicrously expensive. You can get parking for about one third of the price just a couple of blocks away near the art museum. The walk will be nice, and you'll save a lot, particularly if you're in two vehicles. Vail is a neat little town, but there's not a whole lot there, save skiing and drinking. If that's what you're looking for, it's great. If not, you'd probably do better elsewhere.
