Bon at Signal Hill
Just over 5000km to Vancouver! Signal Hill's awesome!
Watched teh mesmerizing waves
Had a wicked day.
The sun was shining so I took full advantage of the situation and put paying a visit up to Signal Hill at the top of the list of things to do today after grabbing a bite to eat. Out of convenience I headed across the street to Tim Horton's and had myself a chunky chicken salad sandwich, a coke and a Boston Cream donut. It was so reminiscent of my lunches with my sister when we'd head over to Save-on on our lunch break and we'd sometimes have this. Good times. I'm not sure why I just felt compelled to type that up. LOL
I had a lazy morning just watching mindless TV before rolling out of bed. I probably would have gotten up earlier but my fave Martha came on and I just had to watch it before getting up. 😊 Anyhoo, soon enough after having my lunch I started my walk down Water Street towards the Signal Hill National Historic Site where I was assured there would be spectacular views from the top of Cabot Tower. Also in this tower is where Marconi received the first
trans-Atlantic wireless signal in 1901 from Cornwall, England.
I decided to take the scenic route up to Signal Hill that would take me on a little walk past the Battery (where there are a lot of cute and colourful houses along the water are located) and then along a scenic coastal walk up towards the Hill. The sign said that it is about 1.7km long and should take about 90 minutes. Well, I kept stopping to look at the waves and also ended up chatting with tons of people on the path and ended up spending about five hours to make it up to the top! The waves were just awesome and I'm not even sure how to begin describing in words how wicked they were. Even my pictures do not do them justice since it is near impossible to capture the "moment" so to speak. It’s just one of those moments that I'll just have to remember in my little noggin.
I met some really interesting people on the way up. There was Wes that lives in St. John's and he loves to take pictures with his new digital camera. After a while it seemed like I had my own personal photographer with me on my "climb" up since I kept getting him to take pictures of me. Okay, so I'm a little vain. HAHA Then there was Sara who is a local dancer who was out there just taking what I think may have ended up being hours of video footage of the waves. There was also Hal, Erin and Sam who are students and were just out there checking out the waves as well. Don the pilot from Edmonton and of course there were tons of other people that I ended up chatting with that I never found out their names. It was pretty cool chatting with so many friendly people!
My word for the day seemed to be amazing. I couldn't help myself and kept saying amazing every time I stopped to look at the amazing and oh so mesmerizing waves. Once I made it up to the top I checked out Cabot Tower and as promised by all of the tourist brochures, the views from up there were just spectacular. It was interesting to watch the boats coming and going. I swear there were so many times it looked like the boats were going to tip because the waters/waves/currents seemed so strong. I sure some people were getting seasick on those turbulent boat rides! CBC television was even up there taping some of the wonderful wave action. So you never know, I may turn up on CBC someday. haha
The exhibit on Marconi and his trans-Atlantic wireless signal of 1901 was not too exciting in my opinion. But there was a funny moment when I was outside on the tower and a guy got on his mobile phone to his friend in England and said, "You'll never guess where I am!" And then he tells his friend about being in the spot where Marconi received the first trans-Atlantic wireless signal. I couldn't help but pipe up, "and tell him that this is the second call!" And he did! All of us out there had a good laugh about that one!
It was getting close to 5PM so I thought I should start heading down the Hill before it got dark out. I took the less scenic but faster route down the hill via Signal Hill Road. I was gonna take a nap since I was feeling a little tired from so fresh air but ended up gabbing with Carol and Marko back at the hostel. We eventually ended up heading out for some dinner at Velma's for some traditional Newfoundland food. Carol's favourite, cod tongues were ordered. I didn't want to order them just incase I didn't like them so I just tried one of Carol's and ordered myself some pan-fried cod instead. Can you say yummers?
It was Carol's last night in St. John's so she wanted to stay out all night since her flight was not set to take off until 6 in the morning or something like that. By the time we finished our dinner it was just past 8:30. We walked down to George Street but it seemed a little quiet and was a bit early to listen to some of the bands playing. So Marko and I wanted to head back to the hostel which meant Carol would follow us too. We said that we'd head out again later at perhaps 10 or 10:30 when things should be a bit more "happening".
Well, we get back to the hostel and Carol keeps bugging me (since I was in the common room using the computer) to go out again. It is only about 9:30 by this time and I say perhaps in about an hour or so. Marko was smart and he retreated to his room. Then all of a sudden Carol gets all whiny and pouty about being "stuck" in the hostel on her last night in St. John's. She's even on the verge of tears when she knocks on Marko's door. Then I start thinking, hmm, I don't really want to deal with a whiny, pouty person cuz how much fun is it to be "babysitting" at the pub when I could be doing other more interesting things...
So I let Carol have her little "fit" and I then retreated to my own room too. I'm not sure if she ended up going out but I didn't feel too guilty because she kept saying at dinner time that she has a few friends that she hopes to hook up with before she left. Plus, since she is underage to even enter a bar or pub I didn't want to have to be her little "servant" to get her a drink at the bar as well if she did manage to get in somewhere.
Besides, I wanted to finish reading the last 50 or so pages of my book, Wicked. Now that is a wicked book! BTW, mission accomplished! lol

Sounds like a great day. Annoying Carol!
