Our last port of call in Vietnam was Chau Doc, and we just spent one night here on the way to Cambodia. Chau Doc is a small fishing village on the Bassac river in the Mekong Delta and it is surrounded by farms and rice fields.

We were only here for a short time so we didn't really get much of a chance to see the town, however in the evening our group took a motorbike trip up a nearby mountain, Mt Sam. We should be used to this kind of thing by now, but again, a lot of the local kids jumped out when they saw us riding along, shouting HELLO and trying to give us high fives! We enjoyed a beer at the top of the mountain, watching the amazing sunset across the countryside, all we could see from the top was rice fields as far as the eye could see, and in the distant we could also see the Cambodian border.

Back at the hotel we ate in a floating restaurant on the river watching the boats go past, although every time they passed our restaurant would bob up and down....we should have taken a note of this as a sign of things to come for the boat trip to Phonm Penh the next day!

We travel to Cambodia in the early morning...

street theft
Hi guy's: Been reading your blogs as I'm going on about the same trip as you are now on. Did you have any problems with pick pockets or grab and run type thefts while in Viet Nam? Have heard that VN is really not ready for tourisum yet because of lying, cheeting tour operators and the rip off artests Did you experience any bad things in VN other than the floods?.... Thanks in advance for your reply.... Jim

Street Theft
Hi Jim, thanks for reading our blog, hope you are enjoying them. We had no problems in VN or any of the places we have visited so far, however, someone in our group had their pocket picked in Ho Chi Minh although nothing was in there for him to lose. We had been warned prior so we kept everything in either in a money belt or zipped away, but this kind of thing could happen in any city, and we have felt safer wandering around the cities in SE Asia than we probably would back home in London. VN definitely caters for tourists well but you may get charged more than a local in some circumstances which can be annoying....but don't let this put you off, you can always barter and its a great country to visit....we will definitely go back 1 day.
