26th february 2004 After a nice sleepful night on a SNCF train, I arrived to Geneva early in the morning. Once I get off the train, all the passengers must go through the passport control. It is nice to go sometimes out of the European Union!. It seems that there are a lot of frenchs goint in the morning to Switzerland, in order to go to work, I guess.
First of all I go to the auberge de jeunesse to look for a place to sleep. It´s ok and i am assigned a top bed in a four people room. The building is not very nice, but it is very close to the city center and the train station, it´s clean and cheap if we think that it is Switzerland (oh, everything is so expensive!!)
Leaving my bag at the hostel I went to the lakeshore. Lake Leman is one of the biggest in central Europe. Geneva lies in its southernmost tip, where the lake pours its waters in the river
Rhône stream, heading for the Mediterranean. As a matter of fact that is one of the things I liked better in Geneva, watching this spot where lake Leman loses its name, the force of the water creating river Rhone again.
The city of Geneva is nice. However before coming to Switzerland I had pictured the country differently: the cities and villages clean, clean, clean almost polished, houses like in cookie boxes and fairy tales, with birds singing and cheese and chocolate everywhere.
I was then dissapointed, for I found a quite normal town, nice, ok, but just a normal town. No cleaner nor dirtier, no nicer than any nice city in Spain or France, for instance. The grey clouds menacing rain didn´t help either to relieve my dissapointment.
I walked a little bit around the streets in the city center, some of them i found a little creepy (that is because of the weather, no doubt) I went in the cathedral, and the inside was naked, nothing much but the stone. (I´m a little bit baroque, I like some decoration) Here preached John Calvin in the XVIth century.
What I enjoyed the most of the cathedral were the views
of the city and the lake from the north tower.
I also visited la maison Tavel, an ancient house from the XIVth that nowadays is like a city museum. I remember some rooms with a lot of furniture. On the top floor you can find a huge sacale model of Geneva in the 1850. I love scale models
I kept the rest of the afternoon walking in Geneva, visiting the Monument to the reformation in the promenade des bastions (Reformation really hit hard in Geneva); waiting for le jet d´eau to start working(a fountain more than 100m high in the middle of the lake) or walking along the lakeshore as far as the United Nation building and the botanical gardens. It started to snow a little bit and everything was nicer.
When I was already tired of walking in Geneva I took a train to the neighbor little village of NYON, also on the lake Leman. It is nothing special, very far from the idillical image of Switzerland that I had pictured in my mind, but nice for a quiet walk along the lake.
I took it easy back in Geneva and in the auberge de jeunesse
the rest of the evening and then to bed. I share the room with two argelians and a tunician. I think the latter was the one snoring all night long.
