We actually made it upstairs for breakfast this morning and we were completely right about it. We weren't even told what/where it was, we had to ask for it. It was a little pastry each filled with cream cheese. Seriously what is wrong with cereal and toast?
We chatted to the Iranian guy (Ally) for a while and an irritating woman kept on butting into the conversation with banarl comments. We learned quite a lot from Ally and in particular that Kosovo is a bit tumultuous at the moment due to a bid for independence that will be decided in the near future. We assured him that we would look into it before we crossed the border into either Serbia or Kosovo.
Yesterday we finally managed to find a few birthday cards after a few weeks of looking for them. Today we bought the stamps and gazed utterly confused at the array of postboxes that lay infront of us. We began to translate the place names however I quickly got bored and just asked two old ladies who pointed out the correct box. (after putting their glasses on)
We really wanted to eat at the vegetarian restaurant again
especially because it had creamy soup on the menu. When we got there it was full and the owner said to come back in approximately thirty minutes and there might be space. We didn't really have much time so we looked for somewhere else to eat. We found a place called Cactus which we decided we had to eat in regardless of what was on the menu. We both had onion soup and four cheese tortelini. It was a big dinner but we didn't think we would be able to get food in skopje with us arriving so late.
We got a taxi from our hostel to the bus station and ran to the place where the ticket offices were. We had twenty five minutes until we knew a bus was leaving for Skopje. We asked at the information desk; "Skopje?" and "No!" was the all too familiar reply. Totally unphased and completely used to cold and unfriendly information staff, I left Rob with the bags and ran around counters asking for a company that went there. I got the name of the company and ran around asking them. Eurolines pointed me in a direction and when I asked
if he meant inside he nodded. We ran inside the next station and realised it was a train station. I approached a mother and daughter and they were unbelievably nice. They found out where we had to buy the tickets from and then ran with us to the office. After all of this I would love to say we got on the bus however someone up there really didn't like us today. That particular bus was fully booked and the next one was at seven, three hours later.
We realised that we would now be arriving in Skopje around one in the morning and it would be a good idea to find an internet café so we could find and book a hostel. We looked around both the bus and train stations and neither had one. We asked a girl and she said there was a café inside the palace of culture if we would like to follow her. We caught a tram there and when we got off we were confronted with a labyrinth of doors, most of which were locked. We ran around the outside trying a few entrances and eventually with some help we found the
café. We did what we needed to and caught the tram back to the bus station.
The journey was ok, we watched an episode of Dexter and listened to some music. The border was easy and we have another stamp in our passport to add to our collection. (though mine is upside down)
The station at Skopje was dark and only the cleaners were around. We got pointed in the direction of a taxi rank and stepped out onto the slippery icy road to catch one. We knew the fayre should be approximately 90 dinar and unbelievably the taxi driver quoted the same price. We pulled up at the hostel and other than the house number there was no indication it was a hostel. I nipped out to check and sure enough it was hostel hostel. The common room was unbeareably smokey and we quickly retreated to our dorm room. We have just been back in to use their internet but it isn't working, so we are going to bed. Night night. Stob.
