Squeaky Clean von Trapp Kiddies and Julie Plastered on Tour Buses

23rd - 24th October…….Salzburg
For ease of train connections and to spend time in a pleasant city, rather than Frankfurt prior to flying back to Australia, I headed by train to Salzburg. Mediterranean is one side of the Alps and Salzburg is on the other and so it wasn’t long before the scene changed from deciduous autumn to snowy winter…in fact it happened entering a tunnel and coming out the other end. Narnia Land through the cupboard.
I had been to Salzburg about 30 years ago and recalled little, other than the castle on the hill overlooking the city and a giant chess set on a plaza. Well the castle and the chess set are still there and the city is still alive with the Sound of Music with the squeaky clean von Trapp kiddies and Julie plastered on tour buses that take devotees to the various sacred film sites. But it is really Mozart that gets the most attention with Mozart statues, Mozart concerts and Mozart chocolates. I rediscovered the grave head stones that Julie and co hid behind in the film to get away from the Nazis. Salzburg is thick with designer and boutique shops of various sorts and is pretty conservative but pleasantly so. Having a bike added a more diverse experience to my time and I cycled out to the Hellbrunn Palace set in a lovely location of park like gardens adjacent a hill with deciduous woodland. Snow still lingered in pockets on the ground. It is here that the glass 'Sound of Music' Pavillon is now located. The romantic coming of age scene was filmed here: 'I am 16 going on 17'.

I meandered my way along the streets to get there, skirting around the castled hill, but returned to the city along 3-4 kms of a wide cycle/pedestrian avenue with large trees in colour. I was mindful that an alpine skyline on my right all the way would be the last time I would see snow for a while.

I left the next morning by train for Frankfurt to start the long journey home. It’s been a relaxing and enriching trip that has seen me complete nearly 1400 kms of diverse cycling. Thanks for following the Danube Cycle Way with me & Koala Ted.
