Friday 2nd Alarm goes off - feels early, 740! Up, shower, what do I want in waterproof bag?! Down for (standard hotel) breakfast, and ready for our day out 830. Picked up by seongteauw (sp?), a bit late but soon we're on our way to the beach. Some guy takes our photo on the way to the speedboat, it's not a particularly nice beach and I think my expression will be 'what are you doing?!'... Onto the speedboat. We're the last... Weather looks good and off we go. Forgot about hitting the waves, um, not sure whether should have remembered travel-sickness but seem to be OK.
First stop, Bamboo Island. We're given snorkeling masks and sent to a roped off area... When we can stop gawking at the blue sea/white sand combination... That picture postcard look really exists! Not sure I've got the hang of the snorkel, seem to keep inhaling water, but there's some cool fish to see under water! Half-hour, back on the boat and we stop in the open-seas outside Phi Phi Don, where can snorkel again, but with more fish. They chuck bread to make sure we get plenty and that is fun!
Another half-hour
and we're off to Monkey Bay. 50 metres out for more snorkeling or look at the monkeys on the shore. Sit down on the beach mat which Kym negotiated to 80 Baht last night, open my 'waterproof bag' and find it's full of water. Not impressed and don't understand why. Check contents, think my SD card has had it, hope to rescue my camera battery. Think everything else will dry... Well, think the tissues have had it! Just glad I didn't bring my phone, and that the camera was in the Aquapac. Guess I'll be back for my 300 Baht waterproof bag from the beach then! Quick snorkel, back on the boat to head for Phi Phi Don and lunch - where there's some Thai food waiting for us - pretty tasty then we relax on the beach/in the sea.
Onto the boat again and we head for Phi Phi Leh, into a lagoon, sail round, photo stop at a bird-nesting cave (where they collect for birds nest soup), then into a bay area where we have one more snorkel - a bigger variety of fish here (but none of the threatened sharks)... My camera seems to be taking
some cool shots from its Aquapac (plenty of bad ones too!), some will make it onto here. Back onto the boat one last time as we head round to Ma Ya Bay, where 'The Beach' (with Leonardo di Caprio) was filmed. Pretty awesome, and another hour to relax (or head into the jungle if you wanted), then they called us back and we whizzed over the waves, past (not through) some great thunderstorms, back to the bay. Yes, my picture looks like expected (in a lovely frame with shells and Krabi tipex'd onto it), so no thanks.
Back in the seoungteouw (basically a 'uwt with seats'), and we get dropped off 430 (feels later). Agree to meet at 6. Get to room - oops, not sure if I'm red or tanned - I was being really careful too. As I head into the shower a massive roll of thunder and it starts to pour. At moments like this that you remember that this is the area where the Tsunami hit (Phi Phi Don had 1000 killed alone)... Only the beach evacuation warnings remind you otherwise. Anyway, forget that for now, and I chill out with the TV (no English
channel though so bit random what to choose!).
It's still pouring, so we don't go too far for a meal - I'm fully dressed in my wet weather gear, but Kym only has an umbrella which we don't think is coping, so we nip into the Indian restaurant. The waiter (we are his only customers at the moment!) spends a long time with, and we discuss mild, medium or spicy - will it be the same as the UK, settle for mild, just in case, as my stomach has only recently settled anyway! After that, feel tired, been a long day, my shoulders appear to have caught the sun. Going to go straight to bed, but then want to sort out what I'm going to do before I have to get to Phuket Airport for 10th November, where am I going to stay, what do I want to do. I've not had a complete rest for ages so may just stay at this hotel, but they're pretty booked out so may need to decide tonight. Meantime, I'm on the internet for 1.5 hours so far...
