Cora, Alec and myself
On our way to grandparent Simpsons from the airport Hello there. Myself and my friend Alec Peachey visited my very good American friends the Messmore's in August 2007 for one week. First of all I would like to tell you how I met this fantastic family. Well, I was on holiday in Hawaii with my family for 2 weeks in 2005. We stayed there for a week and after three nights in Las Vegas, we then moved onto San Francisco for 4 nights. I met the Messmore family while I was soaking up some rays beside the hotel pool under the Hawaiian sunshine. Next to me was Joel, the dad of the family. I commented the pool and before I knew it we were chatting along nicely. I told him that I play football back home in England, that immediately raised a smile on his face as his daughter, Cora, plays football as well; who was in the pool with her older sisters, Beth, Sarah and older brother, Andy. Joel then waved for them to come over to us. He introduced me as the 'English soccer player' which made me laugh. We all started chatting, played in the pool for a while. Then as the days passed, we saw each
Diane in the car
Diane having her first of many beers other every day, talking and chilling. Diane, the mother, was drinking margaritas. This I later found out was normal!!! Before myself and my family left for San Francisco. We all exchanged contact details and have been in contact ever since am now going to go through a day by day account of my trip to Springfield, Illinois. (Simpson land) I went on this trip with my good friend Alec Peachey, who I have known since college.DAY 1: Our flight from London Heathrow was going to be shorter than we thought. Great, that meant more drinking time! On the flight I got talking to a girl from Memphis, TN. Leigh was her name and she was on her way back to Memphis from a year long trip to Africa. She was teaching children French. We were talking for ages, it certainly made the flight go quicker. But this was the point where Alec was going to find out that Americans were going to struggle to understand his broad cockney accent. He had to repeat everything to this girl at least three times. I was in stitches as I could tell he was getting frustrated. Alec and Myself both had our very
first beer of the trip. CHEERS.We arrived at Chicago 'O Hare International airport in the afternoon. I was so excited to see the Messmore's waiting for us at arrivals. We walked through the doors, I was actually quite nervous meeting them again and there they were, Diane, Joel and Cora; all with fantastic smiles. 'Welcome to Lincoln Land' Diane said in her energetic accent. A cuddle with Diane and Cora, a firm handshake with Joel and we made our way outside to the stifling 90 degree Illinois heat!! An open air oven.A short walk to the car and already I was in need of water! Air con was quickly put on high to cool us down. and now we were on our way for our first leg of our Simpson adventure. The car journey to Joels' mother and father's house, was nice and relaxing. We were chatting about everything, and taking in the beautiful Illinois countryside. 3 hours later and we arrived at their house.A small town called Silvis is where they live, the street they live in seemed really quiet and secluded. the houses looked huge, much bigger than they are in my street anyway. As you probably no, if
you've been to the states before, EVERYTHING is bigger there!Amazingly when we arrived, no-one was home, so we went round to the back garden, sat down on their chairs and this is where Diane introduced me to my good friend BUD LIGHT. It went down so well. 'Bud light' will later turn out to be my best friend.Nanny and Grandad Simpson eventually came home, we were introduced to them and they had the broadest American accent I have ever heard. A very gentle, yet distinct mid-west tone. We all got chatting, Joel went out for dinner, he brought back some of the finest American cuisine, KFC. lovely. The house was lovely, pictures of the family everywhere, an important aspect to have in anyone's house I feel. A few more beers were consumed before Nanny showed us to our room for the night. A very small room, which included a double bed. Alec and I had to share a bed. I could tell alec couldn't wait!! haha. 'No touching please' I said to Alec. Who Duly obliged. Our first day over with. A very busy and exciting day without a doubt. Getting over the jet lag was now the priority.BEERS CONSUMED
