Philadelphia - an early start on Sunday to get the Greyhound bus to Philadelphia, another excellent New York deli breakfast for pennies before taking the bus to Mt Laurel, Philly. It was a fairly quick and easy 2 hours to Philly from NY, I got chatting to a guy on his way back to Cincinnati from a week partying with his friends in New York - he was on the bus for another 12 hours after we got off!

Peter picked us up at the bus stop and took us back to their house, a condo on a gated community. The apartment is really nice and there is a communal pool and pond as well as an indoor basketball court and gym. Everything you need. There is a greenbelt forested area along the side of the estate, so there are lots of squirrels and tiny chipmunks running around. We dropped our bags and headed straight out to catch a baseball game.

We saw the Philadelphia Phillies versus the Florida Marlins. It was really good, but damned hot - our seats were high up and in full sun. The stadium is brand new and HUGE. They make a real spectacle out of sport events, there are loads of things to do around the stadium. You don’t have to stay in your seat, so we walked around to the better view areas and stood in the shade. It was a great atmosphere and the Phillies won!

It was back to Peter & Emma’s afterwards to freshen up, eat more pizza and do some well needed washing.

Monday morning Peter dropped us off in the centre of Philly so we could see the sights. It’s an old city so there is a lot of history. We called in at the visitors centre to ask for directions to the museum of art, ( as that is where the steps are that Rocy runs up ). She gave us directions but said that the museum was closed on Mondays, then looked at me and said, "don't worry though, you can still run up the steps and jump up and down at the top". Ha.

We did the historic walk around the old parts of the city, starting at the Liberty Bell. We walked for miles again, stopping in the library and on to the Museum of Art where the Rocky steps are. Naturally, I HAD to run up the steps, then take some photos of the Rocky statue which is now at the bottom of the steps.

We walked back into Philly and had a Philly cheese-steak for lunch, superb. I thought it would be a piece of steak with cheese on the top but it’s actually shredded steak with onion and provolone cheese in a sub roll and was really good.

We took the train back to a small town called Haddonfield, this was a lovely old country town with huge weatherboard houses and an old fashioned main street. We took the bus back to Peters to get ready to go out for dinner. We could have got the bus direct from the city centre but it goes through a place called Camden, which is apparently the most dangerous place in the USA now.

We all had dinner at the Cheesecake Factory, a nice American resteraunt fanous for it's fantastic cheesecakes. After that it was nice to chill out and spend some time with Peter and Emma.

Philly is a really nice city, plenty to do to keep you occupied, but nice and clean and spaced out - a complete contrast to New York. It would have been nice to have had a bit more time to spend with Peter, Emma and the kids.

Peter was good enough to nip out of work on Tuesday morning and take us into the city so we could catch the greyhound again to DC.

Once again, I have forgotten what the building is, but it was of historical importance. Something to do with the declaration of independance I think?
