Not quite the cosy hideout we had in mind. After trying to get some sleep for a hour and a half we gave up. Every single person in the airport wanted us awake. They had a noisy crane thing, people dropped things, wheeled rattling trolleys past us etc. So instead we decided on a film. We switched on the pda, plugged in the headphones and started the film. Slowly bit by bit more people began to impede on our hide out.
Around half three we were made to move by an airport official wanting to open a gate. Seeing as though there was no space anywhere we decided to actively wake ourselves up. We both freshened up in the bathroom and then got a pleasant surprise when we found out that checkout was open. We checked in no problem and then went to get a drink. After narrowly averting an argument by selecting milk for Rob we hung around and watched the news until we boarded the plane.
Getting onto the plane was no problem; it was getting it deemed fit to fly that was. Over an hour late we set off and didn't really make up any time
on the way over. We both tried to sleep but again it was mostly unsuccessful.
Anyway, we met Eero easily and drove straight to a bank machine to withdraw money and get something to eat. We bought some of that evil dark bread that I’ve only seen before in Germany. We grabbed a slice of pizza and then began our guided tour of Tallinn and surrounding areas.
We seemed to go everywhere so i'll probably get them in the wrong order. We saw the old presidents palaces and previous places of residence. We also went and saw the stage that hosts the Tallinn song festival. We then went around a few national parks and some of the surrounding forests and sights. We did stop off at a graveyard that was hidden inside the forest. It was such a weird layout with the graves scattered randomly around the forest floor. The gravestones were all different sizes and shapes and each one had a plot of land that you could do what you wanted with it. The other weird thing about it was that people were laid in areas applicable to them. Eero’s father was in an area of musicians,
then there was an area for writers, journalists, artists etc, we even saw a grave of a murder from the mafia. After this, Eero drove us back home pointing things out on the way however I have to admit that I couldn't keep my eyes open.
Back at the flat I slept for half an hour and rob messed around on the computer for a bit. When I woke up we ate some potato and cheese dish that was bought already warmed from the market. It was nice but very filling.
At half seven we arrived at a forest not far from Varnu. I was told we were going orienteering, however this was more like an army assault course. My god it was tiring. I cannot believe how competitive it was. There were about two hundred people there and they were all running around like loonies. Despite having told Eero that I do not run I did end up running quite a bit. We ran through thick pine trees and around lakes and through old disused military bases. We finished at quarter past nine, which does sound like a short time, but I have never been so tired
and sweaty in my entire life. However it was rather fun and I felt rather proud that we finished it. (we were the last ones to finish though, whoops)
After orienteering we went to look at a power station that used a waterfall to produce its power. The waterfall was actually quite empty because unlike England it hasn’t rained much here. By this time it was rather dark so our stop off at the cliff to look over the sea was rather disappointing. We then went down to the beach for a paddle. Well Rob and I paddled and Eero swam. We then headed home and had some smoked cheese on weird dark bread before crawling into bed a collapsing. Considering we were both awake for around forty hours without any sleep I think we did well today. This was a fantastic introduction to Estonia and we look forward to exploring it in more depth later.
Night night
