Prince Edward Island

We left Maine in late June to begin our summer in Atlantic Canada. After washing the coach and car, we drove 2 days in intermittent rain to reach Prince Edward Island. Of course, we had to wash the vehicles all over again when we got here. The only way to drive to the island is over the 13-mile Confederation Bridge from New Brunswick. We were glad it wasn’t too foggy that day.

PEI, the “Green Island,” is lush, with rolling hills and farmland. The population is around 135,000. Fishing, farming, and tourism are the main industries, with potato farms in abundance. PEI is famous for lobsters, blue mussels, Malpeque oysters, scallops, clams, and fresh fish. We are definitely enjoying the seafood. Island strawberries are now in season, and they are terrific—not too big but really sweet and juicy. They are even packaged in old-fashioned wooden containers.

A pound of blue mussels costs around $1.25 US, and a cooked two-pound lobster is around $10/lb. at the market. Of course, gasoline is another story--over $4.00 a gallon.

Our large campground has over 500 sites and caters to families, with kids and bicycles everywhere. RVs from the US are definitely in the minority. However, we did meet three other Marathon owners and two Virginia Tech alumni. Small world.

We attended the musical production of “Anne of Green Gables” in Charlottetown. Lucy Maud Montgomery, the author of the famous book, is from PEI and her island childhood provided inspiration for the fictional village of Avonlea. There are all sorts of “Anne” tourist attractions in the area, and the musical has been performed here for over 40 years.

We’ve really enjoyed the quiet rural countryside, the quaint fishing villages, and the friendly islanders. Next week, we drive back across the bridge, thru New Brunswick and on to Nova Scotia.
